We are delighted to share the continuation of the inspiring journey of our renowned author, Dr. M.T. Somashekara, who has been associated with PHI Learning for over two decades.

“My academic book authoring journey continued further. I came out with the revised edition of my book on C in 2009 with the title Problem Solving with C (with the foreword penned by Prof. S. Sadagopan, Founder Director, IIITB) and then another edition again in 2018 with the foreword penned by Prof. Chidananda Gowda, Former Vice-Chancellor, Kuvempu University, Shimoga, Karnataka).

I went on to publishing other titles Object Oriented Programming with C++ in 2012 (with the foreword penned by Prof. P. Nagabhushan, Director, IIIT Allahabad) and Object Oriented Programming with JAVA with PHI in 2017 (with the foreword penned by Prof. V. Rajaraman, Honorary Professor, IISc, Bengaluru) with the second edition of Object Oriented Programming with JAVA in 2025.

They have been well-received by both students and educators alike and they have been adopted as official textbooks/references by more than 100 universities and autonomous colleges across India for their UG and PG computer science courses. I am happy about the academic visibility these books of mine and the publisher PHI have brought to me. It is, in fact, a feel-good factor for me.

It has been a wonderful rich-learning experience to work with the highly professional editorial team of PHI. Authoring academic books has now become an integral part of my career and the journey continues. Currently I have taken up a book project on Python, the most sought-after programming language currently and even in the future as it has spread its tentacles to almost all the domains of computing and the manuscript preparation work is in progress.

We are delighted to share the kind words of our renowned author, Dr. M.T. Somashekara, who has graciously endorsed PHI Learning and his publishing journey with us. This is Part 1 of his inspiring story — stay tuned for Part 2 coming soon!

“After teaching for more than a decade in a highly reputed institution St. Joseph's College in Bangalore, the desire of authoring a book germinated in my mind. I started nurturing the desire then onwards. It was also my yearning desire to take off myself as an academic author through a well-established, both nationally and internationally well-known academic publisher. PHI was the first publisher that came to my mind.

I used to refer to many computer science books published by PHI both as a student and as a teacher. I was impressed with the high quality of content, the production of their books, and the academically well-known teachers and researchers in their pool of authors. Their motto of ‘Helping teachers to teach and students to learn’ through high-quality, low-cost textbooks with the imprint of ‘Eastern Economy Edition’ also attracted me.

As I had taught Programming in C many times at both UG and PG levels and had a grasp of strengths and weaknesses of the then established books, I chose Programming in C as the area for my first book. I sent a proposal through the PHI website and eagerly awaited their response. After a few weeks, I got a positive reply, followed by submission of sample chapters, and finally, the acceptance of my manuscript.

The book on C programming was brought out well in 2005 by the publisher. There was no bound to my joy to see my first published book — that too by PHI.”
