Internal linking isn’t a numbers game it’s a context game.

Most people try to “optimize” by adding random links, but that often hurts more than it helps. Search engines like Google are smart enough to understand when links are forced vs. when they genuinely guide the user.

A few things that work well for me:
• I link where user intent naturally expands (not where I can just “fit” a link)
• I use descriptive anchor text, not generic “click here”
• I make sure important pages get multiple contextual links (not just one)
• And I always think in terms of topic clusters, not isolated posts

Also worth noting: too many links on a page can dilute value and confuse both users and crawlers.

Your rule of thumb is solid but that one question you mentioned is the real SEO hack:
👉 “Is this helping my reader?”

If yes, it’s good SEO. If not, it’s just noise.
