In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Vince McMahon faced a challenge that would define WWE's future.

Hulk Hogan wasn't just a champion. He was a cultural phenomenon. Merchandise sales, television ratings, and arena attendance often revolved around one man.

Eventually, Vince knew he needed a successor.

His choice was The Ultimate Warrior.

Warrior possessed an incredible physique, unmatched energy, and a larger-than-life presence. WWE invested heavily in his rise, culminating at WrestleMania VI when Warrior defeated Hogan in one of the biggest matches in wrestling history.

The symbolism was clear.

The torch had been passed.

At least, that was the plan.

While Warrior remained popular, he struggled to maintain the same long-term connection Hogan had built with fans. Creative disagreements and backstage issues further complicated WWE's vision.

Within a few years, the company was once again searching for its next franchise star.

Looking back, many fans consider The Ultimate Warrior the closest WWE came to officially crowning a new Hulk Hogan during that era.

The opportunity was there.

History simply had other plans.

Few WWE decisions have divided fans as much as the end of The Undertaker's legendary WrestleMania streak.

For more than two decades, The Undertaker had accomplished what seemed impossible. WrestleMania after WrestleMania, he defeated the biggest names in wrestling history and built a record that became larger than any championship.

Then came WrestleMania 30.

Standing across the ring was Brock Lesnar.

Most fans expected another Undertaker victory. Even inside the arena, many believed the streak was untouchable.

Then the impossible happened.

The referee counted three.

The stadium fell silent.

For several seconds, fans simply stared at the giant screen in disbelief as the number changed from 21-0 to 21-1.

The reaction was immediate.

Some believed ending the streak created one of the greatest shocks in wrestling history. Others argued the streak should never have been broken at all.

Years later, the debate remains alive.

Did Brock Lesnar need the victory?

Should another superstar have received that moment?

Or should the streak have remained undefeated forever?

Regardless of opinion, one thing is undeniable.

It was a decision fans never forgot—and many never forgave.

In the early 1990s, WWE was searching for the next face of the company.

Hulk Hogan had become a global phenomenon, and Vince McMahon knew he would eventually need another superstar capable of carrying the entire promotion.

One name stood above the rest.

Lex Luger.

With his incredible physique, patriotic image, and natural charisma, Vince believed Luger could become WWE's next megastar. In 1993, WWE launched one of the biggest promotional campaigns in company history.

The company even replaced Hulk Hogan's traditional role with Luger during the famous "Lex Express" tour, sending him across America to connect with fans before SummerSlam.

Everything seemed perfectly planned.

But something unexpected happened.

Despite WWE's massive investment, fans never fully embraced Luger the way they had embraced Hogan. While popular, he struggled to create the same emotional connection with audiences.

As a result, WWE gradually shifted its focus elsewhere.

Looking back, many fans consider Lex Luger one of the biggest "almost" stories in wrestling history.

He had the look.

He had the opportunity.

But he never became the next Hulk Hogan.

In the early 1980s, professional wrestling was a regional business.

Promotions operated within their own territories, and few believed one company could successfully dominate the entire country.

Vince McMahon saw things differently.

After purchasing the WWF from his father, Vince made a decision many insiders considered reckless. Instead of staying within traditional wrestling boundaries, he began expanding nationally, signing major stars from competing territories and taking WWF television into markets controlled by rivals.

The biggest risk came in 1985.

Vince invested enormous resources into a brand-new event called WrestleMania. The show combined wrestling with mainstream celebrities, music stars, and major media promotion. If it failed, many believed WWF could face serious financial trouble.

The pressure was immense.

Then WrestleMania became a massive success.

The event transformed professional wrestling from a regional attraction into mainstream entertainment and helped create the modern WWE empire.

Looking back, many of WWE's biggest moments can be traced to that single decision.

Had WrestleMania failed, wrestling history might look completely different today.

Sometimes one gamble changes an entire industry.

In the late 1990s, WWE introduced one of its strangest and most intriguing mysteries.

It was called GTV.

Without warning, short hidden-camera videos began appearing during WWE programming. The clips exposed embarrassing backstage moments, secret conversations, and personal incidents involving some of the company's biggest stars.

Nobody knew who was behind it.

Week after week, fans waited for answers. The videos became a regular part of WWE television, creating speculation across the wrestling world. Was it a wrestler? A manager? A future superstar being introduced?

The mystery only grew.

Then, just as suddenly as it began, GTV disappeared.

No major reveal.

No final explanation.

No official resolution.

Over the years, former WWE writers and wrestling insiders have suggested that the storyline was originally intended for Goldust. However, creative plans reportedly changed, and the angle was quietly abandoned before WWE could deliver a conclusion.

More than two decades later, GTV remains one of WWE's most famous unfinished mysteries.

Fans still know the videos.

But nobody ever got the ending.

On March 29, 2015, WrestleMania 31 appeared to be heading toward a familiar ending.

Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns were battling for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in a hard-hitting main event. Fans expected one of them to leave with the title.

Then everything changed.

Seth Rollins sprinted to the ring carrying the Money in the Bank briefcase and cashed in his contract during the match itself. Suddenly, the WrestleMania main event became a Triple Threat Match.

The crowd erupted.

Within moments, Rollins delivered a Curb Stomp to Roman Reigns and pinned him to win the championship.

Many fans loved the shock factor and still consider it one of the greatest cash-ins ever.

Others believed it overshadowed the story WWE had spent months building around Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns.

Years later, the debate continues.

Was it a brilliant creative decision that saved the event, or did it derail the championship story WWE originally wanted to tell?

One thing is certain.

It remains one of the most talked-about title changes in WrestleMania history.

When WWE chose Roman Reigns as its next top star, the company believed it was building the future.

Roman had the look, athletic ability, and pedigree of a main-event superstar. After the breakup of The Shield, WWE quickly positioned him as the face of the company and a future world champion.

But fans had a different idea.

Many viewers felt Roman's rise was happening too fast. While other fan favorites like Daniel Bryan, Dean Ambrose, and later AJ Styles were earning organic support, Roman was often presented as WWE's chosen star.

The reaction became impossible to ignore.

Crowds booed championship victories, interrupted promos with chants, and turned major WrestleMania matches into some of the most debated moments of the modern era.

What made the situation unique was that Roman wasn't a villain.

He was supposed to be the hero.

Yet for years, fans rejected the role WWE wanted him to play.

Ironically, everything changed when Roman embraced a more ruthless character as The Tribal Chief in 2020.

The same fans who once rejected him suddenly saw him differently.

What began as one of WWE's most controversial championship decisions eventually evolved into one of wrestling's greatest character transformations.

When Sting arrived in WWE in 2014, many fans believed they were finally about to see one of wrestling's longest-awaited moments.

For decades, Sting had been the face of WCW and one of the few legendary stars who never competed in WWE during his prime. His arrival created enormous excitement, and many expected him to eventually capture the WWE Championship.

But things didn't unfold that way.

Sting's first WWE match came against Triple H at WrestleMania 31. Despite massive anticipation, Sting lost. While the match itself generated headlines, many fans felt WWE had missed an opportunity to establish him as a dominant force.

Months later, Sting entered a WWE Championship feud with Seth Rollins. At Night of Champions 2015, he challenged for the title in what many hoped would become a historic moment.

Instead, the match ended in defeat and a serious neck injury that effectively ended his WWE in-ring career.

As a result, one of wrestling's most iconic performers retired without ever holding the WWE Championship.

To this day, fans continue to debate whether WWE missed the perfect opportunity to complete Sting's legendary career.

On March 28, 2010, Shawn Michaels walked into WrestleMania 26 knowing everything was on the line.

For years, he had been one of WWE's greatest performers. Multiple championships, unforgettable matches, and a legendary career had already secured his place in wrestling history.

But this night felt different.

Standing across the ring was The Undertaker, and the stipulation was simple: if Michaels lost, his career was over.

For nearly thirty minutes, the two legends delivered one of the most emotional matches WWE had ever seen. Every near fall had fans believing Michaels might somehow survive one more time.

Then came the final Tombstone.

The bell rang.

The career of Shawn Michaels was over.

What happened next is what fans remember most. Instead of anger or excuses, Michaels stood up, looked at The Undertaker, and quietly accepted the outcome. The two icons shared a moment of respect before Michaels walked up the entrance ramp for the final time.

For many fans, it wasn't just the end of a career.

It was the end of an era.
