HISTORY
'Time for Action' was written, orchestrated, and mixed by DJ Yess in 1990. Verse lyrics were written and performed by D Crime, chorus lyrics were written by DJ Yess and performed by D Crime.
The final version of the song was recorded at South Studios, Leicester. This place is now known as Leicester college. It was a community studio, ran by Chandy Chauhan, who also engineered the recording. The recording was analog, vocals recorded to tape and final mix to tape. There was an original version, which had live drum recordings by Eddy Dublin. D Crime recorded his vocals in 1 take! South studios was also used at the time by Leicester Hip Hop artists such as ‘The Skywalker Crew’, ‘Masterplan’, ‘Naji Wavey’, ‘FBI Crew’, ‘Loob Lover’ and many more.
Before the final version was recorded, there was a demo version of the song, which featured DJ Yess rapping on a verse and this demo was aired on Leicester’s ‘Fresh FM’ at the end of 1990. During the air Leicester’s ‘Formation’ label had shown interest and wanted to sign the song to their ‘Ruff Justice’ recording label.
The record had made waves over the UK, hitting the ‘Black Echoes’ chart, ‘Hip Hop Connection’ reviews and all main Hip Hop radio shows of the time. We managed to do many shows alongside many great artists. We wanted Leicester’s Hip Hop scene on the map, which at the time was dominated by London’s influential Hip Hop Artists. It was BIG and a very exciting time for us!!
'Time for Action' has now been recognised and acknowledged in a book called ‘Megablast’ (THE TOP 100 UK RAP RECORDS 1987-1993). The song has also been remembered on a heritage panel in the heart of Leicester, outside the Highfields community centre, recognising and commemorating it as part of Leicester’s Hip Hop legacy and history.
