BMW is investing €10 million ($10.4 million) to establish a new battery cell recycling center in Kirchroth, Germany. This facility will implement a "direct recycling" method, developed by BMW scientists, to reclaim materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel from used EV batteries. Unlike traditional methods, direct recycling feeds recovered materials back into the production cycle without reverting them to their original state, reducing energy consumption and costs. The process involves discharging batteries, opening cell cans, removing electrodes, drying them, and shredding to separate active materials from conducting foils for regeneration. Once operational, the center aims to recycle mid-double-digit tonnes of battery cell material annually. Construction is set to begin in the second half of 2025, with validation of the recycling method to follow.

General Motors issued a recall for the 2025 Chevy Equinox EV because it doesn't make enough noise at low speeds.

The recall affects 7,606 electric Equinox models, all of which are estimated to have the defect.

The pedestrian alert system may have the wrong software, causing it to not meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 141.

Without enough noise, pedestrians may be unaware of the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.

GM fixed the issue at its assembly plant on October 16, 2024, and issued the recall on December 5, 2024.

Owners can take their vehicles to a dealership for a free update to the body control module (BCM).

Owner letters are expected to be mailed on January 27, 2025.

For more information, owners can contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

European automakers are adjusting their pricing strategies in response to upcoming EU emissions regulations set to take effect on January 1, 2025. To meet the new requirement that at least 20% of all vehicle sales must be electric, companies like Volkswagen, Stellantis, and Renault are increasing prices on internal combustion engine (ICE) models by several hundred euros. This strategy aims to make electric vehicles (EVs) more appealing to consumers. However, this approach may not be sufficient to meet the sales targets, and automakers are concerned about potential fines for non-compliance. The industry is also facing challenges such as excess capacity, competition from Chinese carmakers, and declining EV subsidies.

Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is increasing in Canada, but concerns persist regarding range anxiety, battery replacement costs, and potential strain on the power grid. Experts acknowledge that while EVs aren't an immediate solution to climate challenges, advancements in battery technology and electricity supply are expected to enhance their viability, positioning EVs as a crucial component in the transition to a cleaner future.
GLOBAL NEWS

In the third quarter of 2023, British Columbia led the country with 33% of new car registrations being either battery-electric (BEV), hybrid-electric (HEV), or plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), followed by Quebec at 27%.

Addressing concerns about the power grid's capacity to handle increased EV adoption, experts suggest that with proper planning and infrastructure development, the grid can accommodate the growing number of electric vehicles.

Regarding battery disposal, while there are environmental concerns, ongoing advancements in recycling technologies and sustainable practices aim to mitigate potential landfill issues associated with EV batteries.

In summary, while challenges remain, the evolution of technology and infrastructure is expected to address current concerns, making EVs a significant part of Canada's sustainable transportation future.
