Would you buy something that promotes empathy? The world needs more empathy. But when it is offered as learning through educational tools and workshops, who wants it? SSE India SSE India Fellowship, in 2019, taught Dr. Shweta Verma, founder of Ginny's Planet, that "users/customers pay for what THEY want/need and NOT what WE want to offer."

Dr Shweta Verma took this learning with a pinch of salt. She wondered WHY the world would not want to learn and share values of empathy, diversity and inclusion?

Ginny's Planet is now 7 years old. We need a new home, a new location to spread our work further through storybooks, workshops, empathy in action clubs and more!

Meet Ginny. She's 11 now. 💛

Back in 2019, Ginny entered the world as a curious 4-year-old through a series of storybooks and India's first doll with a visible disability.

Today, Ginny is 11.

She still loves football.
She still loves the rain.
She still wears her thick spectacles.
She still has nine fingers because she was born with a radial club hand.

Most importantly, she believes that she, like every other child, belongs in this world and has a place in it.

The Ginny Doll is more than a toy.

She starts conversations about differences, inclusion, curiosity, friendship, and empathy. Along with the Ginny Storybooks, she helps children understand that disability is one part of who someone is—not their entire identity.

This year also marks a special milestone—Ginny's Planet has completed 7 wonderful years! 🎉

For the past seven years, Ginny's Planet has been creating storybooks, the iconic Ginny Doll, educational games, journals, eco-friendly gifts, and learning resources that inspire empathy, diversity, inclusion, and social-emotional learning. Today, Ginny's Planet completes 7 years. 💖

On 28 June 2019, we began with a belief that guides us everyday:

Being Different is Okay.

Over the past seven years, this belief has taken the form of dolls, storybooks, workshops, camps, conversations, and now Ginny Ki Duniya Foundation. Together, they have helped thousands of children and adults explore empathy, diversity, inclusion, and the courage to ask questions.

As someone who has spent over two decades as a social work professional, I am convinced that India needs this work—whether India is ready for it or not. We cannot wait for empathy, inclusion, or respect for diversity to become popular ideas. We have to keep creating spaces where children experience them, practise them, and carry them forward into their own lives.

This journey has only been possible because of every child who asked a difficult question, every parent who trusted us, every teacher who opened a classroom, every volunteer who gave their time, every donor who believed in us, and every partner who walked alongside us.

Ginny - the first doll with disability
was launched in Sept 2019.
This was an idea,
ahead of its time.

7 years later, is India ready for Ginny and her storybooks? Are families ready to welcome Ginny home? Or is culture and tradition still coming in the way?

Ginny loves football, loves to run, loves rain. Does her disability stop parents from buying the doll for their children? It is a handmade doll, designed and made with love and care.

How do we make children believe that people are okay the way they are, that being different is okay?

How do we take conversations on diversity and inclusion to children?

It started with these two questions for me and by April 2019, I had joined the SSE India Fellowship; with a head full of questions and a heart ready to turn them into action. With 17+ years of experience in the disability rights, child rights, and inclusion, I wanted to focus on conversations with children.

Every small step we took, got us closer to our goal. Sharing the series of events that we were able to build on in the first year:

1. Launched our first crowdfunding campaign
2. Registered Ginny’s Planet on June 28, 2019.
3. ⁠Started sketching the character of Ginny and wrote the first poem introducing Ginny: Kaun hai Ginny?; also translated to - Who is Ginny?
4. ⁠September 2019, India’s first  doll with a disability- Ginny- was launched
5. Launched first story book: Kaun hai Kenk? And Kahaan hai Kenk?

The idea became tangible. Ginny became real. And we started spreading the message, “Being different is okay!” with the help of Ginny’s stories and how she looked at life.

Jamal also introduced Ginny and Ginny’s Planet at the India Inclusion Summit in November 2019.  We found several allies who would continue to be our friends for years.

Initial trends told us that Ginny Doll is not selling much. We thought this was a marketing problem. We would understand a few years later in our journey that this rejection of doll Ginny came from a deep-rooted cultural fixation on perfection and auspiciousness while rejecting disability. We launched ‘make your own Ginny Workshops;' where children used art and craft to make Ginny Dolls. Our message continued to spread.

By March 2020, as the world shifted into lockdown, so did we. We moved online, bringing empathy, diversity, and inclusion workshops into digital spaces. We became part of Sheroes- a women-only social network led by Sairee Chahal. 

By the end of our year 1 of existence, we were about to become a STEP Fellow (for women entrepreneurs), explored new product ideas.

Hence, we invite you for: Being Different is Okay: Finding Comfort in Not Fitting In

This interactive online workshop by Dr. Shweta Verma is a safe, non-judgmental space for young adults to reflect on identity, comparison, belonging, and the pressure to be “normal.” Through conversations, stories, small activities, and reflection, participants will explore how differences shape our experiences — and why not fitting into every box doesn’t mean something is wrong with us.

This is not a lecture or awareness class. There is no pressure to share personal experiences or “say the right thing.” You can participate, listen quietly, reflect, or simply be present.

Classrooms are not just learning environments, they form the very foundation on which a child leans on, especially children with anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or developmental differences..

A well-designed classroom

👍 Has a routine promotes a child’s sense of security.
🌟Is a safe space that accommodates different paces, and sensory needs without expecting every child to behave uniformly.
💖 Has low-stimulation spaces giving children towards a safe setting that grants them agency.
🌼 Has predictable adult response to children’s behavior. When a teacher responds to a distressing situation calmly then it becomes part of the child’s sense of safety.
🚀Are spaces with ample scope for visual aid. A displayed schedule or visuals that supports children in enabling consistency is a win-win.

The gap between a child who "settles well" and one who does not is often the environment that has been structured to accommodate and support different needs. Routine along with flexibility enables the balance in a diverse classroom.
