The Congress is likely to contest fewer seats than it did in 2020 as seat-sharing talks within Bihar’s Mahagathbandhan inch toward a conclusion. According to top alliance sources, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is close to finalizing a formula that would allocate 58 to 60 seats to the Congress — down from the 70 it fought in the previous Assembly elections.

While the Congress has insisted on maintaining its earlier tally, the RJD — the alliance's largest and most dominant player — has been reluctant to concede more than 55 seats. “The Congress has been made to understand that with new partners in the fold, it has to share the burden,” a senior RJD leader said.

In a move widely seen as an electoral incentive, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on July 17 announced that domestic households in the state would receive up to 125 units of free electricity each month.

The announcement comes just months ahead of the state assembly elections, marking the first major welfare promise of the poll season and prompting criticism from opposition parties and economists over the revival of freebie politics.

The scheme is set to benefit around 1.67 crore consumers and replaces the earlier partial subsidy model with a full waiver for those consuming within the 125-unit cap.

Schools across several districts in Uttar Pradesh will remain closed from July 16 to July 23 due to the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, an annual religious pilgrimage that sees the participation of lakhs of devotees.

The closures, ordered by local administrations, are intended to prevent disruption and ensure public safety as Kanwariyas travel in large numbers, especially with Shivratri falling on July 23 this year.

The pilgrimage typically results in heavy road traffic and congestion, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures.

What began as a routine municipal meeting in Bihar’s capital last week quickly descended into chaos — culminating in police charges, political outrage, and a citywide manhunt. At the center of the storm: Shishir Kumar, the controversial son of Patna Mayor Sita Sahu, now facing assault charges and accused of violently disrupting government proceedings.

According to police and eyewitness accounts, the July 11 meeting of the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) turned into a virtual battleground when Shishir — who holds no official position in the body—allegedly stormed into the session flanked by bouncers. Tensions erupted after a fiery exchange between Shishir and former deputy mayor Vinay Kumar, leading to an all-out scuffle with Opposition councillors.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training - NCERT has released a new Class 8 science textbook that draws connections between modern scientific principles and early Indian discoveries.

Part of a curriculum revamp under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the updated book includes dedicated segments titled “Ever Heard Of?” and “Our Scientific Heritage”, aiming to engage students with indigenous knowledge alongside standard scientific content.

Among the featured examples is the atomic theory proposed by ancient Indian philosopher Acharya Kanad, who theorized the idea of indivisible particles or “parmanu” centuries before Western scientists.

The Supreme Court on July 14 came down heavily on Madhya Pradesh-based cartoonist Hemant Malviya, calling his controversial social media post on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers “inflammatory” and questioning whether artists, including comedians and cartoonists, should exercise greater restraint.

A bench comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Aravind Kumar, hearing Malviya’s plea challenging the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s denial of anticipatory bail, asked pointedly whether he was prepared to delete the post — a suggestion the 50-year-old cartoonist agreed to.

Justice Dhulia observed sharply, “Comedians, cartoonists... look at their conduct,” before adding, “Still no maturity. We agree that it is inflammatory.”
