American citizen George Glezmann, a Delta Airlines mechanic, has been freed by the Taliban after spending more than two years in captivity in Afghanistan. Glezmann was detained in December 2022 while visiting the country as a tourist.

His release came during the Trump administration following talks involving U.S. hostage envoy Adam Boehler and Qatari mediators. Unlike an earlier January deal, no prisoner exchange was involved; the Taliban described his release as a goodwill gesture.

The footage has been linked online to Chile, which historically produced several types of air-dropped cluster munitions. However, claims that Chile “invented” the cluster bomb are misleading. Historical records show that cluster weapons were developed and used by multiple countries long before Chile entered the field.

Chile’s former arms industry, including Cardoen Industries, did manufacture and export cluster bombs during the 1980s, including weapons supplied to Iraq.
