A historic and much-discussed petition has been filed in the Supreme Court, demanding that the benefit of reservation should be given only to those who are actually economically weak and needy. The petition states that at present, even within the SC/ST/OBC category, many people are very rich, powerful and hold high positions—like IAS officers, ministers, MPs, MLAs or big industrialists—who have been taking advantage of reservation for generations, while the poor and backward people of the same category are deprived of opportunities. The petitioner says that the system of 'reservation within reservation' should be implemented, that is, there should be division on economic basis within the SC/ST/OBC quota, so that the real right of reservation reaches only the poor and deprived sections. For example, people holding high positions like President Draupadi Murmu (ST), Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud (SC) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi (OBC) do not take advantage of reservation, but similar powerful and affluent families should also be kept out of it. The Supreme Court has accepted this petition for hearing and has issued a notice to the central government seeking a reply. This case can start a big change in the reservation policy of the country in the coming time.
