Dibrugarh Press Club organises one-day journalism workshop....
DIBRUGARH, Aug 10: The Dibrugarh Press Club (DPC), in association with Dr. Radhakrishnan School of Arts, Commerce and Science, organised a one-day workshop on journalism at the C.K. Sarma Hospitality Centre, DDSA Stadium, Dibrugarh, on Sunday as part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations.
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Rupam Saikia, Inspector of Colleges, Dibrugarh University and Chairperson, Centre for Juridical Studies, DU, in the presence of special guest Bikash Gogoi, Principal, Dr. Radhakrishnan School of Arts, Commerce & Science; Manash Jyoti Dutta, President, DPC; Ripunjoy Das, General Secretary, DPC; along with other dignitaries and members of the club.
Three interactive sessions were conducted by eminent resource persons. The first session was delivered by Tridiv Hazarika, General Manager (HR) of Oil India Ltd., followed by Satyakam Borthakur, noted writer and professor in the Department of Assamese, Dibrugarh University. The concluding session was conducted by senior journalist and former East India Correspondent of BBC World Service, Subir Bhaumik.
In his address, Tridiv Hazarika spoke on the transformation of media in the digital age, highlighting the rise of platforms such as Facebook, X, and YouTube. He urged students to use these tools positively and productively in their spare time without hampering their studies.
Satyakam Borthakur discussed the challenges facing journalism today, including political interference and suppression of information. He advised aspiring journalists to ensure fairness by presenting all sides of a story and to work for the welfare of the public.
Subir Bhaumik expressed concern over the increasing control of media houses by political interests and the revenue-driven nature of newsrooms. He warned against the unchecked spread of unverified information on social media and urged young journalists to remain connected with mainstream media for credibility and professionalism.
A total of around 200 students from various schools and colleges including Dibrugarh University participated in the workshop. Speaking on the occasion, Manash Jyoti Dutta, President of Dibrugarh Press Club, said, “We are delighted with the overwhelming participation of students, who actively interacted with the resource persons.” General Secretary Ripunjoy Das stated that the primary objective of the workshop was to inspire students to explore journalism as a career.
Participants expressed appreciation to the Dibrugarh Press Club and its partners for organising such an insightful and fruitful workshop.
The event concluded with the distribution of certificates to all participating students. The Dibrugarh Press Club extended its gratitude to Dr. Radhakrishnan School of Arts, Commerce and Science for its association, and also thanked the Dibrugarh District Sports Association (DDSA) along with other individuals and associates for their support in making the event a grand success.
