: Tata Sons, owner of Air India, on July 18 announced the formation of a charitable trust to support victims of the Air India Flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad, which claimed 260 lives on June 12.
Named The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust, it will provide immediate and long-term aid to the families of the deceased, injured passengers, and others affected by the tragedy.
The trust will also assist first responders, medical personnel, and relief workers who supported rescue efforts, helping them cope with trauma and stress.
Tata Sons and Tata Trusts have jointly pledged ₹500 crore (₹250 crore each) towards the initiative. The fund will cover ₹1 crore ex-gratia payments to families of the deceased, medical care for the injured, and reconstruction of BJ Medical College Hostel, which was damaged in the crash.
The trust, registered in Mumbai, will be managed by a five-member board. Two members have been appointed so far: Tata veteran S. Padmanabhan and Tata Sons’ General Counsel Sidharth Sharma.
