DIMAPUR — On Saturday morning, around 9.30 am, a man believed to be intoxicated climbed onto a 500 kV transformer at Dhobinala junction in Dimapur.
Alert passers-by, sensing the potential danger to both the man and the public, promptly informed the Power department. Officials responded swiftly by shutting down the power supply to prevent any mishap.
Thanks to the department's quick action, a rescue operation was carried out within minutes, and the man was brought down safely from the high-voltage transformer, averting what could have been a tragic incident.
A lineman at the scene expressed astonishment at how the man, despite his condition, managed to climb the structure.

The man’s identity could not be confirmed, but sources said he was let off after being scolded for his reckless behavior and for endangering lives.

*Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has expressed concerns that the upcoming assembly elections in Assam, scheduled for next year, could stall the ongoing efforts to resolve the longstanding border dispute between the two states.*

*Addressing the media on Friday, July 25, Tynsong said that preparations for the elections are likely to keep Assam's political leadership and administrative machinery preoccupied, potentially impacting the joint inspection of the six remaining disputed areas.*

*Tynsong, who heads Meghalaya’s regional committee for Ri-Bhoi district, noted that the busy election season could hinder the scheduling of crucial field visits by the regional committees of both states.*

*He further added that Meghalaya is currently waiting for Assam to confirm a mutually agreeable date for the field visits. In March 2022, Assam and Meghalaya had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to resolve disputes in six out of the 12 areas of contention along their 884-km shared border. However, the second phase of talks focused on the remaining six areas has seen limited progress despite multiple rounds of discussion at both bureaucratic and political levels.*

*The unresolved areas include Langpih, Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, Desh Doomreah, Block-I, and Block-II, all of which have historically been flashpoints, with some witnessing violent incidents in recent years.*

The Nagaland Government has taken stringent measures to identify and deport illegal immigrants attempting to enter the state through various check gates, in light of the ongoing eviction drive in neighbouring Assam.

Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister, Y Patton today said that he is aware of the situation and affirmed that additional forces would be deployed along the Assam-Nagaland border areas and in Niuland, Chümoukedima, and Dimapur districts. He stated that the issue of illegal immigrants has already been discussed with the Director General of Police and the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, and that action would be taken accordingly.

Referring to an incident on Tuesday night, Patton informed that all intercepted illegal immigrants were sent back.

In view of the ongoing eviction drive in Assam, the Niuland district administration on Tuesday directed all villages in the district not to panic, but to remain vigilant and alert to the possible influx of illegal immigrants. People have been asked to report any unusual movement or migration.

Meanwhile, sources said that the Dimapur district administration and the Commissionerate of Police have also geared up to tackle the issue of illegal immigrants. Sources informed that strict vigil would be maintained at check gates and railway stations to detect and prevent the entry of suspicious individuals from Assam.
