Fresh Tension Erupts Along Assam-Meghalaya Border; One Killed in Clash

A renewed clash along the Assam–Meghalaya interstate border claimed one life on the spot, following a violent confrontation between villagers over crop harvesting rights. The incident occurred near Lapangap and tapat area, where tension has been recurring every harvest season.

According to reports, a group of people from the Meghalaya side allegedly entered the border area to harvest paddy without prior discussion with their counterparts from the Assam side. In retaliation, the local villagers tried to stop the harvesting, leading to a heated exchange. The situation soon turned violent as both sides resorted to stone-pelting and the use of catapults, resulting in the death of one person.

Residents of the area have expressed deep concern over the recurring border tensions and criticized the Assam and Meghalaya Government for its continued neglect of the interstate border issue. They also blamed the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) for failing to take effective and bold measures to resolve the long-standing dispute.

Local leaders and organizations have strongly condemned the violence, urging both state governments to immediately intervene and establish a permanent solution to the border problem to ensure peace and safety for residents.

In the 2025 Asia Cup final in Dubai, India defeated Pakistan by 5 wickets to clinch the title.

However, the Indian team refused to accept the trophy (and winners’ medals, at least initially) from Mohsin Naqvi, who is the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President, Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman, and also holds a political office in Pakistan.

The presentation ceremony was delayed by more than an hour. Eventually, the trophy was removed from the dais and was not handed over to India in a formal ceremony.

Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav later said that he felt the team had been “denied” the chance to lift the trophy, something he claimed he had never seen before in his career.
