Five Women Allege EMI Collection Scam; Complaint Filed Against Loan Collector in Diphu

Diphu, August 4: Five women from Diphu have lodged a complaint alleging that an EMI collector of Assam Gramin Vikash Bank's Diphu branch misappropriated their loan repayment money for over two years.

According to the complainants, the five women jointly availed a loan of ₹2.5 lakh from the Diphu branch of Assam Gramin Vikash Bank more than two years ago. Each woman received ₹50,000 and regularly paid monthly EMIs of around ₹2,500.

The women alleged that the EMI collector, identified as Albert Teron, collected the monthly instalments personally on several occasions and also sent his family members to collect the payments from their homes. They believed that the collected amounts were being deposited with the bank.

However, when the women recently approached the bank seeking a fresh loan, they were allegedly informed that their previous loan remained completely unpaid and that not a single EMI had been credited to their loan account. As a result, they were told that they were ineligible for a new loan due to the outstanding dues and the negative impact on their CIBIL scores.

Following this revelation, the women sought assistance from the Karbi Students' Association (KSA), Karbi Nationalist Organisation (KNO), and Karbi Anglong Democratic Women Association (KADWA). Representatives of the three organisations accompanied the women to the Office of the Superintendent of Police (SP), Diphu, where a formal complaint was submitted against Albert Teron.

The complainants have requested a thorough investigation into the alleged misappropriation of their EMI payments and demanded appropriate legal action against the accused. Police are expected to investigate the allegations. The claims have not yet been independently verified, and no official statement from Albert Teron or Assam Gramin Vikash Bank has been released at the time of writing.

Media Team Questions Alleged Overpricing of Ci******es; Heated Argument Breaks Out at Patradisa Shop

Patradisa, Karbi Anglong: A late-night visit by a group of media personnel to a shop at Patradisa, near Bakulia, led to a heated confrontation after they questioned the price of a packet of ci******es.

According to the media team, the shopkeeper demanded ₹140 for a cigarette packet carrying a printed Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of ₹125. The media personnel questioned the reason for charging above the printed MRP, pointing out that consumers generally cannot be charged more than the MRP for packaged goods. During the discussion, the shopkeeper allegedly gave explanations that the media team found unsatisfactory.

While the conversation was ongoing, a local customer, identified as Mohammed Rafique Uddin, reportedly joined the argument. According to the media team, he stated that he was from Guwahati and criticised the role of the media, claiming that "because of the media, no one is happy." He also reportedly challenged the journalists to call the police, saying he was prepared to face them.

The incident created tension at the shop for some time before the situation eventually calmed down. No official complaint or police case had been reported at the time of writing.

Under India's consumer protection framework, packaged commodities are generally required to be sold at or below the printed MRP, except in specific situations permitted by law. The incident has raised concerns over alleged overpricing and the treatment of journalists carrying out public-interest reporting.

Karbi Anglong Times will continue to follow the matter and publish any response from the shop owner, Mohammed Rafique Uddin, or the concerned authorities if received.
