📗 EBW Breaking :

🟩 INDIA's Renewable Energy Portfolio ( REPo) Capacity hits 160 GW in installed terms while 24OGW installed still comes from the Thermal Power ( Coal, Lignite, Gas & Diesel etc).

💢 In Exportable terms, INDIA's 400 GW of Installed Capacity can Generate 1970 TWh ( Terrawatt hours ) of electricity equivalent to 240GWe of "Peak Optimal Generation Utilizable ( POU) " Capacity Index. The base Load is fixed at 200GW max or 50% rated or installed Capacity due to Low Hydropower Share of 11.62% in Installed terms & 14-15% max in National Power Generation Mix ( NPGM) terms or 300TWh to be precise... And it has Flexibility of "Plug -n-Play" with Peak-Shaving Characteristics & "Spinning Reserve" Capability. Only Natural Gas Power Plants have similar ability but of 25.4 GW

📌 While Solar inspite of 51 GW has low PLF & 6-8 hours availability per day resulting in 10.5 GWe of actual generation amounting to 89TWh...Similarly Wind Energy of 40GW installed only produces 10 GWe or 87TWh. Thereby, Solar & Wind together account for only 9% of NPGM. While Nuclear Renewable with 6.78GW performs better with 5GWe available with Optimal Generation of 43TWh.

♨️ Thermal Coal with 24.5 GW installed Capacity has almost 19 GW idle only making 5GW meanig exportability at 75% being 3.75GWe making 33TWh feasible to add to the 300TWh of Hydro making 333TWh of "Peak - Shaving" catering to Peak demand curve. This is 17% and another 30TWh of SHP( Small Hydropower ) it only reaches 18% of Peak Generation Utilizable of 1970 TWh, way below the requisite 30-35% necessary to sustain close to 50Hz Grid Frequency.

🔋 Now due to Infirm & intermittent nature of Solar & Wind the Gross 176TWh ( 89 TWh + 87TWh) of these can barely match the 1170 TWh of base Load from Thermal Coal at 65% PLF on 205 GW installed. Lignite & rest making up small addition of another 30TWh. Together Coal + Lignite Power accounts for 1200TWh or 61% of Optimal NPGM share.. With Solid State ( Inflexible) RE of Solar + Wind 176TWh & 43TWh of Nuclear the Base Load RE + Thermal becomes 1419TWh or 72% of POGU.

🟨 This Clearly demonstrates the Futility of SURPLUS POWER idea , a MYTH being propagated for Long without understanding that Unless PEAK - Shaving Capacities of 30-35% are built, GRID CODE cannot be sustained ( Operating Frequency band being 49.9 Hz to 50.05Hz).

Dr. A V Mohan Rao, Founder & Chairman, Spectrum Renewable Energy Ltd. (SREL), a pioneer in the Bio-CNG arena, has built the first ever Bio-Methanization facility together with High Performance Membrane (Patented Technology of EVONIK, Germany) based Separation and Upgradation of CBG (Compressed Bio-Gas) to 98%+ purity.

This plant of 7 tpd capacity of Bio-CNG/ CBG having Feed Stock capacity 250 tpd comprises of Press Mud – 150 tpd and Bovine Waste (Cow Dung) – 100 tpd produces 700 Nm3/ hour.

He discusses with Prof. A. G. Iyer, Editor-in-Chief & Publisher, ENERTIA and President, REPA (Renewable Energy Promotion Association) on how the SATAT Scheme of MoPNG (Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas) supported by MNRE (Ministry of New & Renewable Energy), Government of INDIA, can be brought into further traction and 'Upping-the-Ante' to further towards SATAT+ as envisioned by REPA, INDIA’s APEX Umbrella Body and Non-Profit Organization for advancing INDIA’s Geostrategic Targets for Renewable Energy (RE), to scale upto 10,000 Plants/ Projects for an outlay of US $ 50 Billion opportunity for Bio-CBG from the present 5,000 Plants with a US $ 25 Billion outlay.

Prof. Iyer categorically states that the actual full potential is more than 2,50,000 Lac Plants (India having approximately 6 Lac Villages/ Rural Economic Hubs). In a Decentralized and Distributed delivery we can energize the Rural Economy, which Dr. A V Mohan Rao agrees and wishes INDIA works upon the fulfillment of this extra ordinary opportunity of delivering Energy from Waste (EFW) which is completely Renewable and Sustainable and has the potential to Nullify our Natural Gas inputs through Production of Bio resources in the form of Bio-CNG/ CBG.

Not to mention, advanced High Performance Membranes Technology can lead to furthering the CBG output towards production of “GREEN HYDROGEN”.

Further, the opportunity of generating Power (Electricity) from raw Bio-Gas always exists to empower the Rural Economy and the Hydrogen future is a derivative of that process. Also, the far brighter and bigger 'Icing-on-the-Cake' is "ORGANIC FERTILIZER" which will be available in plenty that promises to revive the soil health and fuel Agronomy Wealth in the medium and long-term.

💢 The Briefs :

"5th GAS Economy 2021”
(Virtual Conclave) - Via ZOOM Platform...

THEME : GAS for Powering INDIA’s GDP

Friday 20th August 2021 ( 11-00am - 5pm)

🎯 Key Focus for 5th GAS Economy 2021 were as follows :

1. SATAT and its Import Substitution Potential under RE Mobility and Decentralised RE Delivery
2. Natural Gas for Power, Transport and Fertilizer Sectors – The LNG Angle
3. Markets for GAS – Concurrent Theme
4. ‘HYDROGEN’ as a ‘Future Renewable Fuel’

🟦 Backgrounder & Proceedings briefs :

INDIA’s Natural Gas (NG) demand comes via the following Sectors / Segments of the Economy :

1) Fertilizer Production and Manufacturing (Priority Sector)
2) Power Generation – For Gas based Power Plants
3) Transportation Sector – Consumption in the form of CNG and LNG
4) Domestic and Commercial – LPG

INDIA’s annual demand for Natural Gas consumption is expected to increase by 25 Billion Cubic Metres (BCM) in the period of 2020 – 2024 which translates into upwards of 9% p.a. Annual Growth Rate as per the IEA (International Energy Agency). Also, the share of Natural Gas in the Energy basket is expected to increase to 15% by 2030 from the current level of 6%. INDIA is thereof set to emerge as the 2nd Largest driver of Gas demand in Asia (after CHINA) and 5th Largest contributor Globally (after CHINA, IRAN, RUSSIA & UNITED STATES).

Demand for Natural Gas in the Domestic market is traditionally dependent on Fertilizer Sector - 28%, Power Generation – 23%, CGD Entities – 16%, Refineries – 12 % and Petrochemical Industries – 8%. Almost 2/3rd of INDIA’s 2020 – 2024 demand expansion is seen to come primarily from substitution of Liquid Fuels to Gas as per IEA. The Government aims to have 10,000 CNG Outlets in the next 5 years from the present 2,500 CNG stations for retail sale.

LNG is imported at market price (predominantly via Spot Markets rather than Long Term Supply Contracts) from Global suppliers that reaches the terminals of Dahej and Hazira in GUJARAT and Kochi in KERALA through direct LNG Cryogenic Storage Carriers / Vessels. Then the terminal Infra needs to further regasify for use as R-LNG. All this is a highly energy intensive logistics for Natural Gas in the LNG mode, a very costly proposition needing billions of Dollars.

INDIA has in the meantime achieved Road Transportation of ferrying imported LNG in trucks for delivering the Gas based economy by promoting use of LNG as a substitute to Diesel.

It is in the above background that the potential for Bio-CNG and compressed Bio-GAS is a major move by the MoPNG (Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas) via SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) which aims at indigenisation through Large Scale adoption of Bio-CNG (Bio-Compressed Natural Gas) or simply CBG (Compressed Bio Gas) which can be used for Automotive Sector through conversion of Large Quantum of Agro Waste, Municipal Solid Waste and other such Bio-Organic Waste for efficient production of Bio-CNG locally. This is the only way to import substitute in the GAS ECONOMY using Bio-Energy Initiative of Bio CNG or CBG. This needs fast-tracking of SATAT implementation, which can bring wonders through the targeted 5000 Bio CNG Projects, which if achieved, can prove a game-changer.

Natural Gas is available and used in various formats such as Natural Gas (NG), RLNG, LNG, Shale Gas, Gas Hydrates Bio-Gas, etc.

INDIA has roughly 25 GW of Gas based Power Projects in operation and many of these are either operating at below their optimal capacity or sometimes run out of Natural Gas supplies due to prioritisation of the Fertilizer Sector. Now, the competitive pressures of the Transportation Sector to substitute Diesel with Natural Gas puts further challenges to fire our Gas based Power Projects.

Secretary MoPNG also made the Valedictory address at "5th GAS ECONOMY 2021" - Then GAS for Powering INDIA's GDP , organized by REPA ( Renewable Energy Promotion Association) & ENERTIA Foundation on Friday, 20th AUGUST 2021 and Spoke on SATAT( Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation ) for CBG ( Compressed Bio Gas ) Projects , 5000 no's at Investment outlay of a whopping Rs 1,75,000 Crores ( US $ 25 billion) to be completed by 2024-25 .... REPA is working closely with MoPNG on this.... Almost 2275 LOIs have been awarded as on date by MoONG, GoI.... RBI has given PSL status to these Projects & SBI , Bank of Baroda & Canara Bank are presently.the Bankers for Debt Financing thereof... Very big opportunity .....

REPA has made representation to INDIAN BANKS Association ( IBA) to adhere to the RBI PSL direction for SATAT and enable the "Zero Additional Collateral" - With only Project Plant & Machinery being Collateral.... Financing of these projects , Fast track disbursal , that will enable the Agro & Farm Sector by Converting the Waste into a Bio-Resource for delivering Compressed Natural Gas ( CBG) that will become our greatest internal resource and substitute for future imports of natural gas.

All Agro Waste, Wheat Chaff ( Parali), Sugarcane Bagasse, Oil Seeds waste, Rice Husk , Vegetable Waste, Straw etc can be processed to generate Bio-Methane and upgraded to commercial scale CBG for use in Cooking, Automotive and even power generation in De-Centralized mode.

The MoPNG has guaranteed 100% procurement of CBG from these plants that if promoted further ahead to the 5000 nos planned can literally reduce our NG, LNG imports by 50%. Therein lies the Great potential Impact of the SATAT CBG to be our masthead for RE Source for Agro Economy across Transport , heat & power too. together with De-Centralized Solar it offers a fertile combination for Freeing our Rural Economy from Energy Dependence & Alleviate Energy Poverty using Bio-Energy & Solar as Renewable Energy Hybrid.

Future of IC (Internal Combustion) Engines based Transportation across Roads, Rail and even Air could actually see the advent of the HYDROGEN Powered Future, the Energy Source being abundant on the planet. Only handling of Hydrogen and combining it with Renewable Energy is the Hybrid using advanced FUEL CELLs Tech. Hydrogen as a Fuel to power Sea Transportation and also to move Rail has been successfully piloted. It is in this background that in the Future of GAS Economy, Hydrogen will have a major role.

"5th GAS Economy 2021" deliberated on all of the above and more covering Exploration, Production, Markets, Technologies for the Natural Gas Sector, Logistics, etc....Thanks to all those who Supported actively participation to enable the Grand Success of the Forum aimed to strengthen and Further the "GAS Economy Emergence & Consolidation for INDIA" as a Positive Action for Climate Equity ( PACE) - a REPA Sustained pitch & theme.

Leading Dignitaries Who participated from INDIA & Overseas were joined by John Rosebush, Founder, President & CEO , Worldwide Development Corporation ( WDC), USA ; Brad Kempo, Founder & CEO, GCPP ( Global Capital Procurement Partners), CANADA ....both FELICITATED with the Prestigious Honorary REPA - WIRE ( World Institute for Renewable Energy) - GFRE ( Global Fellowship in Renewable Energy) .... together with them till now 13 Select Gobal Experts from INDIA, North America & EU have been awarded this prestigious GFRE.
