We had a rare opportunity to witness and film a Kalampattu ritual honoring the Divine Feminine.
Kalampattu is a unique traditional ritualistic artform that has been handed down in Kerala, India for the last 700 years or so. This intricate work of art is created as an offering to the Divine. It is made completely by hand using natural powders. These powders are plant based and come in 5 symbolic color pigments.
In this case the artists created an image of the Goddess Bhadrakali with 16 arms. It took a whole day to create this intricate Kalam by 4 artists.
In the evening there was an elaborate ceremony of honoring and finally a ritual of erasing this beautiful Divine work in 2.5 minutes. All symbolizing the cosmic cycles of the Divine – creation and dissolution.
