Meet Neeru Dhanda, the first Indian woman ever to win an ISSF World Cup gold medal in women's trap shooting. She grew up in a small district of Haryana, and today, an entire nation is chanting her name.
Neeru's journey is just as inspiring as her victory. Hailing from Jind, Haryana, she joined the Indian Army's Corps of Military Police after women were inducted into the force. She later trained at the prestigious Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh. It was there that years of discipline, determination, and relentless practice shaped her into a world-class athlete.
The 26-year-old delivered an outstanding performance at the ISSF World Cup in Lonato, Italy, scoring 121 out of 125 in the qualification round.
In the gold medal match, she stayed calm under immense pressure and hit 27 out of 30 targets, outlasting former world champion Carole Cormenier of France in a nail-biting finish that came down to the very last shots.
Her coach, Peter Wilson, summed it up beautifully: "Neeru has put in a massive amount of invisible hard work off the range, and this gold is a perfect reward for her perseverance."
Her achievement is a landmark moment for Indian sports, the Indian Army, and every young girl who dreams of representing the country on the biggest international stage.
It also highlights how institutions like the Army continue to nurture sporting talent alongside serving the nation.
Neeru's historic triumph reminds us that excellence is built through consistency, patience, and the courage to compete against the very best. Every target she hit in Lonato was the result of years of unseen effort and unwavering commitment.
