• Hudson's revolutionary "Step-Down" chassis debuted in 1948 — passengers stepped down into a floor pan surrounded by the frame, giving it a much lower center of gravity than rivals • The Commodore was Hudson's top luxury line in 1949, with the Monobilt unit-body construction (one of the first true unibodies in America) • Powered by Hudson's 254 cubic-inch inline-eight, it was famous for comfort, handling, and later formed the basis for the dominant Hudson Hornets that won NASCAR in the early 1950s
