Republic Day in India

Many people throughout India celebrate the nation's Republic Day, which is a gazetted holiday on January 26 each year. It is a day to remember when India's constitution came into force on January 26, 1950, completing the country's transition toward becoming an independent republic.

Republic Day honors the date on which the Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950 replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India.[1]

The Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949, and came into effect on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system, completing the country's transition towards becoming an independent republic. 26 January was chosen as the Republic day because it was on this day in 1930 when the Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress as opposed to the Dominion status offered by the British Regime.

It is one of three national holidays in India, the other two being Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti.

Meanwhile in Guru Pornima is an Indian and Nepalese festival dedicated to spiritual and academic teachers. and now also virtual teacher's like Google and Yahoo, we celibrate this festival to show respects and express our gratitude towards all teachers.

The festival is celebrated on the full moon day called as Purnima in hindi and Pornima in Marathi,The word guru is derived from two words, gu and ru. The Sanskrit root gu means darkness or ignorance, and ru denotes the remover of that darkness. Therefore, a guru is one who removes the darkness of our ignorance.

We lost a Bharat Ratna! The most cherished nation's former president A.P.J Abdul Kalam is no more with us.


SHILLONG: India's 11th President APJ Abdul Kalam died on Monday evening at a hospital in Meghalaya, where he had gone to deliver a lecture. He was 83.
The former President, who was in office from 2002 to 2007, had collapsed during the lecture at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong, around 6.30 pm. He was taken to the Bethany hospital. Doctors said he had suffered from a massive cardiac arrest.

"President Kalam was brought to the hospital at 7 pm. When he brought in there was no sign of life. He was taken to ICU to try and revive him, which was futile," hospital sources told NDTV.

The government will declare a seven-day national mourning, reported Press Trust of India, quoting Union Home Secretary LC Goel.

Paying a special tribute to Dr Kalam later in the evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "My mind is filled with so many memories, so many interactions with him. Always marvelled at his intellect, learnt so much from him."

Home Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted, "Deeply saddened at the sudden demise of the former president of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. He was an inspiration to an entire generation."
