Press Club of Sikkim condemns Citizen Action Party for defaming journalist Nirmal Mangar

GANGTOK, FEBRUARY 21: It has come to the attention of Press Club of Sikkim that a fellow journalist Nirmal Mangar serving as Editor with Sikkim Chronicle digital news portal is being harassed across social media with defaming cartoon and meme by members of Citizen Action Party. They are doing so using their official page as well as in constituency level social media handles. Citizen Action Party's senior leaders were seen sharing memes on Nirmal Mangar through their official social media handles as well.

Mangar being a journalist of repute has been covering various issues of the State and as per his duty, he reached Rangpo police station where he interviewed Samson Tamang from Darjeeling district accused of spreading communal hatred in Sikkim.

Mangar as a journalist is liable to ask questions but what the accused has spoken or the individual names that he has taken in the interview are not in control of Mangar or any journalist for that matter. Those opinions were clearly made by the accused Samson Tamang himself. Accusation against Mangar also run on the context of how he was able to reach the Rangpo police station at the exact time. As journalists, everybody tends to keep their own "source" in order to cover such events. There were many other journalists who had spoken with police officers inquiring about if and when Samson Tamang would be brought to Sikkim. If Mangar had a better source in the police to get that information then no question should arise how he reached the spot.

In the evening at Sadar Police Station where CAP had camped in protest along with their President Ganesh Kumar Rai, there were few members of CAP shouting slogans against Sikkim Chronicle media house which Nirmal Mangar represents. However journalist from the media house were in attendance covering the protest.

The actions of certain CAP party workers targeted against journalist Nirmal Mangar is a condemnable act. They are defaming a journalist for doing his job and in doing so tarnishing journalism in the State.

Press Club of Sikkim will not tolerate any further defamation of Nirmal Mangar who stands as an executive member of Press Club of Sikkim as its culture secretary. If Citizen Action Party continue to do so then the entire journalist and media fraternity will rise in support of Nirmal Mangar and journalist fraternity at large.

An attack on one journalist, is an attack on the entire media fraternity of the State. We appeal CAP members to come to their senses and in time issue an apology to Nirmal Mangar for their condemnable act of defamation.

Publicity Secretary
