DST Advances Sikkim’s Vision under CM Prem Singh Tamang Golay’s Leadership
Press Secretary to the Chief Minister, Yougan Tamang, visited the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of Sikkim, to review key initiatives being implemented under the leadership of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang Golay.
The department is driving three major programmes — GLOF Hazard Mitigation, Mero Alaichi, Mero Dhan (My Cardamom, My Wealth), and Cancer Research and Prevention — all focused on using science and technology for public welfare, safety, and sustainable growth.
Following the 2023 South Lhonak Glacial Lake Outburst Flood, the Chief Minister directed DST to develop a comprehensive GLOF management strategy. Sikkim has since formed a High-Level Steering Committee and a Multi-Disciplinary Task Force, launching India’s first multi-lake, field-based GLOF hazard assessment in collaboration with NDMA and national research institutions. Over 40 high-risk glacial lakes have been identified for detailed studies, making Sikkim the first state to establish a Glacial Hazard Mitigation Protocol.
Under the Mero Alaichi, Mero Dhan mission, DST has initiated a scientific revival of large cardamom farming through biotechnology, organic methods, and farmer participation, in partnership with the Department of Biotechnology (DBT). The project focuses on disease-tolerant cultivars, bio-control measures, and genetic improvement to restore the livelihoods of over 20,000 farming families.
The department is also advancing Cancer Research, Prevention, and Treatment, with a focus on early detection, data-driven prevention, and behavioral change. In collaboration with ICMR, DHR, and DBT, efforts target major cancers including stomach, breast, and cervical, aiming to reduce long-term mortality by up to 50%.
Press Secretary Yougan Tamang praised the leadership of Minister Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, Principal Secretary Dr. Sandeep Tambe, Secretary D.G. Sherpa, Principal Director O.T. Bhutia, and the entire DST team for their dedication to advancing science-led development in Sikkim.
He was accompanied by Sanjay Dilpali Rai, Chairperson of the Art, Culture and Heritage Board.
