Sikkim for Nepal: Minister Mahabir Pun Flags Off Relief Team to Flood-Affected Areas

Kathmandu, Sept 3: Sikkim’s humanitarian initiative “Sikkim for Nepal” has reached the affected areas of Nepal, with a dedicated relief and medical team sent to assist communities impacted by the devastating floods.

The initiative, launched by Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), was undertaken to extend relief materials and medical assistance to people affected by the disaster and convey Sikkim’s solidarity with the people of Nepal.

As the team reached Nepal, Nepal’s Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Mahabir Pun, displayed the national flag of Nepal and formally sent the Sikkim team towards the affected destination to begin their relief efforts.

The team, under the banner of “Sikkim for Nepal” and associated with the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, is carrying essential relief supplies and medical assistance for affected communities.

The initiative reflects the close bond and spirit of humanity, compassion and brotherhood between Sikkim and Nepal, with the team expected to provide support to those affected as recovery and rebuilding efforts continue.

Sikkim has also conveyed its condolences to families who lost their loved ones and solidarity with those affected by the disaster.

Nepal Flood Update: Death Toll Rises to 1,252, Over 4,200 Still Missing

Kathmandu, Sept 3: The death toll from the devastating flash floods that struck Nepal on August 26 has risen to 1,252, according to the latest figures compiled by Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA). At least 4,216 people remain unaccounted for.

Search and rescue operations continue across the worst-affected areas, with nearly 900 hydropower workers still reported missing. Chitwan has recorded the highest number of recovered bodies, followed by Nawalparasi East, Nawalparasi West and Nuwakot.

The disaster, triggered by a massive ice-and-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border, caused widespread destruction along the Bhotekoshi River, damaging settlements, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure.

The situation remains critical as rescue teams continue searching for those still missing.

CM Chairs 5th Governing Board Meeting of SICB

Gangtok, Sept 3: Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) chaired the 5th meeting of the Governing Board of the State Institute of Capacity Building (SICB) at Samman Bhawan today.

The meeting reviewed the Institute’s physical and financial progress since its inception, along with the proposed action plan for the current financial year.

Discussions also focused on integrating various skilling programmes to further strengthen capacity building and skill development in the state.

The Chief Minister directed the concerned officers to ensure effective implementation of the decisions taken during the meeting and called for focused and result-oriented efforts to enhance SICB’s role as a key institution for capacity building and skill development in Sikkim.

The meeting also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening institutional capacity, equipping youth with relevant skills and creating greater opportunities for learning, growth and employment across the state.

Sikkim Milk Shortage Sparks Questions as Demand Reportedly Rises 48.95%

Gangtok, Sept 3: A shortage of Sikkim Milk has been reported in several markets across the state, with the Sikkim Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Limited attributing the situation to a reported 48.95% rise in consumer demand.

Dr. T.B. Ghatani, Managing Director of the Milk Union, said the sharp increase in demand has resulted in a temporary supply shortage in various parts of Sikkim. He said efforts are underway to meet the increased demand and restore regular supplies.

The Union has also appealed to consumers to purchase Sikkim Milk only from registered and authorised agents, citing the need to ensure proper distribution and prevent unauthorised sales and possible hoarding.

The reported 48.95% increase in demand has, meanwhile, raised questions among consumers about what has led to such a sudden rise in milk consumption.

While some have questioned whether the increase could be linked to population growth, a rise in demand does not necessarily indicate a similar increase in population. Factors such as changing consumption patterns, tourism, institutional purchases and seasonal requirements can also contribute to higher demand.

The Milk Union has urged consumers to cooperate with the existing distribution system as efforts continue to increase supply and address the shortage.

Sikkim Sends Relief Team to Nepal After Devastating Flash Floods

Gangtok, Aug 31: Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) today flagged off the “Sikkim for Nepal” humanitarian mission from Ridge Park, sending a relief team to Nepal to assist communities affected by recent flash floods.

The delegation, comprising five doctors, rescue volunteers and around 30–32 personnel, will provide medical assistance, rescue support and essential relief to affected communities.

The team is carrying three truckloads of relief materials, including medicines, clothes and other essential commodities.

The Chief Minister expressed Sikkim’s solidarity with the people of Nepal and appreciated the SKM, medical professionals, rescue volunteers and others involved in the humanitarian effort.
