The historic Old Silk Route at Gnathang, situated at an altitude of 13,500 ft, was formally reopened after refurbishment undertaken by the Gnathang MPCS.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Chief Guest Minister Arun Kumar Upreti, accompanied by MLA Pamin Lepcha, Corporation Department Secretary Mrs. Gloria Namchu, Principal Registrar Smt. Jabi Thapa, and Additional Registrar Gangtok Bijay Pratap Hang S***a.

As part of the event, the Cooperation Flag was hoisted, symbolizing unity and collective progress.

The reopening of this heritage route is expected to enhance its cultural and historical significance, boost tourism in the high-altitude region, and contribute to cooperative-led growth and development.

Mr.Tenzing Dorjee Bhutia, Chairman of SIMFED, has been appointed as the State Executive Member of the Youth Wing of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha Party, in partial modification of the earlier order under Article IV, Clause (i), Sub-Clause (d) of the SKM Constitution.
He expressed gratitude to the Hon’ble President and Chief Minister, Shri Prem Singh Tamang-Golay for his trust and guidance, and to Shri Lakpa Moktan Jojo for his constant support and mentorship. Shri Tenzing Dorjee Bhutia stated that this appointment is both an honor and a responsibility to work with sincerity and dedication towards empowering the youth, strengthening the grassroots, and contributing to the vision of a progressive Sikkim.

Sikkim Scientist Featured Again in World’s Top 2% Scientists List
Dr. Hari Bhakta Sharma (Luitel), hailing from the remote village of Central Martam in West Sikkim (Gyalshing–Bermoik constituency), has once again been featured in the world’s Top 2% Scientists list, published by Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier (2025 edition) in the field of environmental science and research.
He was also included in the 2024 edition, and with this achievement, Dr. Sharma is reported to be the first scientist from Sikkim to be listed twice in this prestigious global ranking. This prestigious list identifies the world’s leading researchers, representing approximately 2% of all scientists worldwide.
Researchers are classified into 22 broad scientific fields and 174 sub-fields, with data drawn from Elsevier’s Scopus database.
Dr. Sharma currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering, SMIT under Sikkim Manipal University (SMU). He earned his Ph.D. from IIT Kharagpur and is actively engaged in research on critical environmental challenges, including solid waste management, plastic waste management, sanitation, and wastewater treatment, particularly with focus in the Himalayan region.
In addition to his research, Dr. Sharma is deeply committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation of environmental engineers. His repeated recognition on the global scientific stage is widely regarded as a matter of pride for Sikkim and the broader academic community of the region.

Sikkim Wins Medals at Culinary Olympiad in Chennai
Sikkim achieved remarkable success at the Culinary Olympiad in Chennai, organized by the South India Culinary Association, the first Worldchefs-endorsed competition. The state secured 2 bronze medals and 3 merit certificates.

Gaurav Balamphaki (Ganga Ram Manager) won a bronze in Authentic Regional Cuisine, while Phur Lakpa Sherpa from IHM Rumtek earned bronze in the Dessert category. Merit certificates were awarded to Zarah Amy Raii and Renuka from ICFAI University.

The achievement was made possible with the support of Chef Abhiru Biswas, marking a proud moment for Sikkim.

CM XI Triumphs Over Kalimpong MLA XI in Shahid Cup Exhibition Match

Kalimpong, September 21: The much-awaited Shahid Cup Exhibition Match at Mela Ground, Kalimpong, turned into a memorable celebration of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and unity as the Sikkim CM XI, led by Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), secured a thrilling 2–1 victory against the Kalimpong MLA XI.

ADB Approves $179 Million Loan for Sikkim’s Urban Development
Sikkim, September 20: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 179 million (approximately ₹1,495 crore) loan for the Sikkim Integrated Urban Development Project. The initiative aims to modernize seven key towns in the state — Gangtok, Gyalshing, Mangan, Pakyong, Rangpo, Singtam, and Soreng — by upgrading water supply, sanitation, sewerage networks, urban mobility, and disaster-resilient infrastructure.

Key components of the project include the construction of new water treatment plants, transit complexes, and expansion of sewerage systems. Additionally, digital governance tools through GIS systems and gender-inclusive community projects are planned to strengthen sustainable urban development.

Officials stated that the project will transform these towns into sustainable, resilient, and livable urban centers, improving the quality of life for residents and supporting long-term economic growth in Sikkim.

This initiative marks a significant step in the state’s efforts to modernize urban infrastructure while ensuring environmental sustainability and community participation.

Two Assam Rifles Jawans Killed, Five Injured in Manipur Ambush

Manipur, September 20: Two personnel of the Assam Rifles were killed and five others injured after their vehicle was ambushed by armed assailants in Bishnupur district on Friday evening, officials confirmed.

The attack took place at around 5:50 pm in the Nambol Sabal Leikai area. Security forces immediately reached the site and evacuated the injured personnel for medical treatment.

No group has claimed responsibility for the ambush as of now. Security has been tightened in the area, and a search operation is underway to track down the attackers.

CM Pays Last Respects to Late Smt. Bina Maya Sharma

Namchi, Sept 20: The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), today visited the residence of Hon’ble MLA and Chairman of DACS, Shri Satish Chandra Rai, in Namchi to pay his final respects to the late Smt. Bina Maya Sharma (Rai), wife of Shri Rai.

The Chief Minister expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and friends, offering prayers for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
