Education and Social Welfare Departments Brief Media on Various Scholarship Schemes
Gangtok, October 28 (IPR): A press conference was held today wherein officials from the Education Department and the Social Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim, briefed the media on the various scholarship schemes being implemented under both departments.
The press conference was chaired by the Chairman, Student Welfare Board, Education Department, Mr Sonam Chopel Sherpa, in the presence of the Director, Education Department, Ms Tshering Kee Chingapa, Additional Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Ms Bandana Chettri, and officials from both departments.
The briefing aimed to raise awareness among students, parents, and educational institutions about the wide range of State and Centrally sponsored scholarship schemes available through the National Scholarship Portal at www.scholarships.gov.in and www.nsp.gov.in.
Additional Director (Scholarships), Education Department, Mr Bilal Prabhakar, elaborated on schemes such as the Post Matric Scholarship (Merit), Chief Minister’s Merit Scholarship (CMMS), Merit & Prerna Scholarship, National Scholarship for Post-Graduate Studies, NEC Scholarship, and National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS).
In addition, centrally sponsored schemes like AICTE Pragati, AICTE Saksham, and Ishan Uday (UGC) were also discussed in detail.
Likewise, Additional Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Ms Bandana Chettri, briefed the media on the various scholarship schemes implemented by the department for the benefit of students belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and Economically Backward Classes (EBC). She also informed about scholarships such as the Post Matric Scholarship for SC Students, Post Matric Scholarship for ST Students, and PM YASASVI Post Matric Scholarship for OBC and EBC Students, along with the rates of Pre-Matric Scholarships for SC, ST, and OBC/EBC students.
In his address, the Chairman, Student Welfare Board, Mr Sonam Chopel Sherpa, stated that the scholarship schemes aim to support meritorious and deserving students across diverse disciplines and educational levels, thereby ensuring inclusive educational opportunities and promoting academic excellence in the State. He informed that students may visit the Education Department office for any grievances or further information related to the scholarship schemes.
He also appealed to all elected representatives to actively disseminate information about these schemes in their respective constituencies to ensure that the benefits reach genuine and deserving students. He added that the briefing was organised to enhance awareness about the various scholarship programmes and to encourage eligible students to avail themselves of these opportunities.
Officials from both departments concluded by urging all eligible students to apply well before the closing dates. These comprehensive initiatives are aimed at promoting inclusive education and supporting meritorious students in pursuing their academic goals without financial constraints.
