1930 – 2025

Yarpa Kunzang Sherab, a respected bureaucrat of the Government of Sikkim and recipient of the prestigious Pema Dorji Award from the Chogyal P.T. Namgyal for his distinguished service, passed away at his residence on Thursday, February 20, 2025. He was 96 years old. His lifelong dedication to public service and his remarkable contributions to the state have left an enduring legacy.

Born on April 1, 1930, in Gangtok, he began his government career in 1954. Over the decades, he held several key administrative positions and was a driving force behind the establishment of District Offices (D.O.) in Sikkim’s North, South, and West districts. Renowned for his expertise in financial management, he served as Finance Secretary for many years, earning the title "F.S. Yabla." His leadership was pivotal in founding the State Bank of Sikkim and modernizing the state’s income tax system. After Sikkim’s transition to democracy, he continued to serve as Secretary across various government departments until his retirement.

In his younger days, Yarpa Kunzang Sherab was known for his athleticism and was a prominent footballer for the Kumar Sporting Football Club. He was also a dedicated community leader, playing a key role in the Sikkim Tribal Welfare Association and the Joint Action Community. His efforts were instrumental in bringing H.H. the 17th Karmapa of Tsurpu to Rumtek Monastery.

He is survived by his spouse, sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and siblings. His wisdom, leadership, and commitment to Sikkim will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 24, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. at Dechenling.
