They are usually Buddhist prayer flags, especially common across the Himalayas, Ladakh, Sikkim, Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet.
The idea is that prayers and mantras printed on the flags are carried by the wind, spreading blessings, compassion and goodwill to all beings.
The five traditional colors represent the five elements:
🔵 Blue — Space/Sky
⚪ White — Air/Wind
🔴 Red — Fire
🟢 Green — Water
🟡 Yellow — Earth
So when you see a mountain covered in these colors, they’re generally not meant as decoration—they’re symbolic prayers carried by the wind.
