Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang S***a Urges Rajnath Singh for Climate-Resilient North Sikkim Highway with Proper Geotechnical Study Prior to Ex*****on

New Delhi, September 7, 2026: Lok Sabha MP from Sikkim, Dr. Indra Hang S***a, met Hon’ble Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh Ji and raised the urgent need for climate-resilient and scientifically planned road infrastructure in Sikkim, particularly in North Sikkim.

During the meeting, Dr. S***a apprised the Defence Minister of the challenges faced by border roads in Sikkim’s fragile Himalayan terrain and urged the Ministry to consider a climate-resilient highway to North Sikkim, designed to provide reliable all-weather connectivity while responding to the region’s growing vulnerability to landslides, flash floods and other extreme weather events.

Dr. S***a also emphasised the importance of undertaking proper and comprehensive geological and geotechnical studies prior to the ex*****on of major highway projects. He stressed that understanding the terrain, slope stability, geological conditions and drainage patterns at the planning stage is essential to ensure the safety, durability and long-term sustainability of critical road infrastructure in the Himalayan region.

He further highlighted that lessons from recent disasters underscore the need to move towards science-based, climate-resilient infrastructure planning, particularly for strategically important roads in Sikkim.

Dr. S***a thanked Shri Rajnath Singh Ji for his continued support and consideration towards Sikkim’s strategic connectivity and infrastructure needs, and expressed hope for continued cooperation in strengthening the State’s border road network.

“In the Himalayas, infrastructure must be built with the mountains, not against them. Proper geotechnical assessment and climate resilience must be integral to the planning and ex*****on of major highway projects in Sikkim,” Dr. S***a said.

Brazilian Football Legend Cafu Welcomed in Darjeeling, Launches Two Football Teams

Darjeeling, 6 September: Brazilian football legend and 2002 FIFA World Cup-winning captain Cafu received a grand welcome at Lebong Ground in Darjeeling today, where he virtually laid the foundation stone of the proposed Sidra Hills Sports & Wellness Resort at Arya Tea Estate, located around 10 km from Darjeeling town.

Cafu, whose full name is Marcos Evangelista de Moraes, also launched two football teams of Arya Tea Garden—Darjeeling Warriors and North Bengal Fighters—aimed at nurturing and developing football talent from the hills and North Bengal.

The 56-year-old former Brazil captain is one of the most accomplished players in football history. He won the FIFA World Cup with Brazil in 1994 and 2002, captaining the national side to its fifth World Cup title in 2002. He also featured in the 1998 World Cup final, where Brazil lost to France. According to FIFA records, Cafu remains the only player to have appeared in three consecutive FIFA World Cup finals.

The proposed Sidra Hills Sports & Wellness Resort is part of Arya Tea Garden’s tourism development plan. The project is being developed across nearly 40 acres of land at an estimated cost of ₹215 crore. The resort is expected to feature more than 100 luxury rooms and villas, along with a wide range of sporting and recreational facilities.

The facilities will include football, basketball, tennis and several other sports, besides adventure activities such as All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs). The project is scheduled for full completion by 2031.

As part of efforts to identify, nurture and provide professional opportunities to promising footballers from the region, Arya Tea Company Limited also launched the two dedicated football clubs with academies.

The Darjeeling Warriors will primarily focus on providing opportunities to footballers from the hills, while the North Bengal Fighters will scout promising young players from Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Malda and Dinajpur.

The initiative is aimed at creating a structured pathway for young footballers to sharpen their skills and pursue opportunities at higher levels of the sport.

The event was attended by Sankar Ghosh from the Ministry of Tourism, Dr. Indranil Khan from the Ministry of Youth Services and Sports, Bishal Lama, Minister for Hills Affairs, along with the Darjeeling MLA and Kurseong MLA, among other dignitaries and stakeholders.

The presence of Cafu added international significance to the event, while the launch of the football academies and the proposed sports and wellness resort marked a major step towards combining sports development, youth empowerment and tourism promotion in the Darjeeling hills.

Press Release from the Office of the District Collector, Mangan District

Mangan, September 6, 2026: Following the landslide incident reported earlier today near the confluence of the Teesta and Chyakoong Rivers, the District Administration, Mangan, conducted a comprehensive on-site assessment this afternoon to evaluate the ground situation.
A joint inspection team comprising the Joint Director-cum-DPO, DDMA Mangan, alongside Shri Chandan Chhetri, SDPO Chungthang, and officials of DDMA and Chungthang Police visited the site opposite the Theng Tunnel.

Key Findings from the Ground Assessment:

* River Flow Restored: The natural channel previously restricted by debris has opened up further, allowing river water to discharge at a steady, normal speed.
* Reduced Risk: The threat of sudden water release or flash surges downstream has significantly reduced compared to the morning hours.
* Current Status: Overall condition along the river stretch remain stable and normal.
* Continuous Monitoring: Teams from Chungthang Police under the supervision of SDPO Shri Chandan Chhetri, along with personnel of the DDMA, remain deployed on-site to maintain 24/7 surveillance of the river levels and slope stability.

Public Advisory

While the immediate danger has notably decreased, public safety remains the administration's highest priority. Residents living along the downstream Teesta river belt are advised to remain vigilant, avoid venturing near riverbanks, and voluntarily move to safer, higher locations as a precautionary measure until full clearance operations are completed.

The District Administration is actively monitoring the entire belt, and further updates will be shared as the situation develops.
