The iconic 100-meter Doordarshan (DD) TV tower in Gangtok, Sikkim, located on Chandmari Hill, Gangtok, East District and a landmark since 1991, is currently being dismantled due to structural issues and geological threats, with its concrete portion being removed as of October 2025.

Completed in 1991, the tower served as a crucial broadcast and communication hub for over three decades, symbolizing Sikkim’s technological progress in the early years of television transmission in the region.

It was a difficult decision to make, but safety had to come first, said an official from Doordarshan Kendra Gangtok. “The tower had served its purpose well for more than three decades, but time and terrain have taken their toll.

Residents of Gangtok have expressed both sadness and nostalgia as the dismantling progresses. For many, the DD tower was not just a utility structure but a symbol of technological progress and a visual marker of home.

As the cranes and cutting equipment continue their work on Chandmari Hill, the city bids farewell to one of its most recognizable landmarks—a silent witness to Gangtok’s transformation over the past three decades.
