Palzor stadium
Located in the heart of Gangtok ,it's a prominent sports venue. It can host 30,000 spectators , besides earlier hosting the I-league and I-league 2 , and also hosts matches of various local divisions and tournament l.
It's symbol of state's passion for sports and it's commitment to promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyle .
[HISTORY]
Named after the erstwhile king of Sikkim , Chogyal palzor namgyal. So, back the time this piece of land was used by Tibetan traders to station en route to Sikkim and India.
Around 1939 , the same ground was sanctioned by Sir Basil Gould (British political officer) to be turned into grass demonstration farm for which Kikuyu grass from Africa and grass from Venezuela was brought in , the whole task was completed in 1941. Ground became a public meeting venue for special occasion and political gatherings.
The Chogyal , members of the aristocratic family and few British officials also loved to play Polo on those ground , and ground was also Named as Polo Ground.
It was on 24 July 1998 , the stadium was torn down in an effort to make it bigger and better. The project of redesigning and modernizing cost was around ₹30 crore , out of which ₹15.36 crore was from donor contribution and remaining from state coffer. The actual work started off in 2001, and the project was completed by April 2005.
The ultra-modern paljor stadium was inaugurated by Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam,
The president of India on 22 September 2005 in the presence of the Governor of Sikkim and then Chief minister of Sikkim Dr. Pawan Kumar Chamling.
