Happy 90th Birthday to His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama" Gyalwa Rinpoche☸".
The 14th Dalai Lama (born 6 July 1935; full spiritual name: Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso, shortened as Tenzin Gyatso; né Lhamo Thondup) is the incumbent Dalai Lama, the highest spiritual leader and head of Tibetan Buddhism.

His Holiness’s parents were small farmers who mostly grew barley, buckwheat and potatoes. His father was a man of medium height with a very quick temper. “I remember pulling at his moustache once and being hit hard for my trouble”, recalls His Holiness. “Yet he was a kind man too and he never bore grudges”. His Holiness recalls his mother as undoubtedly one of the kindest people he has ever known. She gave birth to sixteen children, of whom seven survived.

His Holiness had two sisters and four brothers. Tsering Dolma, the eldest child, was eighteen years older than His Holiness. At the time of His Holiness’s birth she helped his mother run the house and acted as the midwife. “When she delivered me, she noticed that one of my eyes was not properly open. Without hesitation she put her thumb on the reluctant lid and forced it wide fortunately without any ill effect”, narrates His Holiness. He had three elder brothers: Thubten Jigme Norbu - the eldest, who was recognized as the reincarnation of a high lama, Taktser Rinpoche - Gyalo Thondup and Lobsang Samden. The youngest brother, Tenzin Choegyal was also recognized as the reincarnation of another high lama, Ngari Rinpoche.

“Of course, no one had any idea that I might be anything other than an ordinary baby. It was almost unthinkable that more than one tulku (reincarnate lama) could be born into the same family and certainly my parents had no idea that I would be proclaimed Dalai Lama”, His Holiness writes.

He was named Lhamo Thondup, which literally means ‘Wish-Fulfilling Goddess’. Taktser (Roaring Tiger) was a small village that stood on a hill overlooking a broad valley. Its pastures had not been settled or farmed for long, only grazed by nomads. The reason for this was the unpredictability of the weather in that area. His Holiness writes in his autobiography, “During my early childhood, my family was one of twenty or so making a precarious living from the land there”.

Seed syllable of the vajra holy mind, the heart essence and seed syllable of Vajrasattva,

ha ha ha ha hoḥ
Seed syllables of the four immeasurables, the four empowerments, the four joys, the four kayas, and the five wisdoms,

bhagavan sarvatathāgatavajra
You, who are the vajra of all who have destroyed every obscuration, of all who have attained all realizations, of all who have passed beyond suffering, and of all who have realized emptiness and know things just as they are,

mā me muñca
Do not abandon me,

vajrī bhava
Grant me the nature of indestructible union, the realization of your vajra nature,

mahāsamayasattva
You, the great pledge being with the holy vajra mind,

āḥ
Make me one with you.
Syllable of uniting in non-duality.

hūṃ
Syllable of the wisdom of great bliss.

phat
Syllable that clarifies the wisdom of inseparable bliss-emptiness and destroys the dualistic mind that obstructs realization.

Whatever manifestations of realms, palaces and forms there are, peaceful and wrathful deities, they do not exist on a gross level. They are forms of shunyata endowed with all the supreme qualities. Therefore, they are known as possessing the aspect of being without self-nature. The minds of those buddhas are completely filled with the wisdom of unchanging non-dual bliss emptiness. Therefore, they are known as possessing the aspect of union. Their body, speech, and mind are eternally filled with the taste of great bliss, free from increase and decrease. Therefore, they are known as possessing the aspect of great bliss.

The first Gyaltsab Rinpoche Paljor Dondrub (1427–1489) was born in Nyemo Yakteng and received the title Goshir. In Tibet, Gyaltsab Rinpoche is known as Tsurphu Goshir Gyaltsab Rinpoche. He is the regent looking after Tsurphu monastery and the interests of the Karmapas in between two Karmapas. In Tsurphu, Gyaltsab Rinpoche's monastery Chogar Gong lies directly behind Karmapa's monastery.
Gyaltsab Rinpoche was recognized by the Sixteenth Karmapa before he was born in 1954 and after the official enthronement by the 16th Karmapa in 1959, Gyaltsab Rinpoche made the journey to Sikkim together with the Karmapa.Tradition holds that in the 8th century, the one who would eventually become known as the Gyaltsab Rinpoche - Precious Regent - emanated for the benefit of others as Karchen Palgyi Wangchuk, one of 25 main disciples of Guru Padmasambhava. Then again centuries later, he emanated as Jetsun Repa Shiwa Od. This incarnation was recognised by the Sixth Karmapa Thungwa Dhunden and was raised by him to be installed as his regent under the name Paljor Dhondrup (1416-1478.)

Since that time, there have been a series of Goshir Gyaltsab, such as: Tashi Namgyal (1487-1515,) who was the first to receive the red crown in recognition of his close ties with the activity of His Holiness. Then followed Dakpa Paljor (1516-1546) and Dakpa Dhundrub (1547-1613.)
The 5th Gyaltsab was Dragpa Choyang (1618-1658.) Enthroned by the 6th Shamar Rinpoche, he formed part of the Golden Garland. A person who spent most of his life in retreat, he was a friend of the 5th Dalai Lama ("The Great Fifth.") When the 10th Karmapa had to flee the Mongol invasion, it was he who remained behind as regent.
In 1992, along with the Tai Situpa, he enthroned 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Urgyen Trinley Dorje at Tsurphu, Tibet, main seat of the Karmapas.

His Eminence is the protector of Rumtek until His Holiness Karmapa assumes the throne there. The contemporary seat of His Eminence, himself, is at Ralang.
Ralang Monastery is located six kilometers from Ravangla(South Sikkim)and is located near a famous hot spring. It is one of three Kagyu monasteries established in Sikkim according to the will of the 9th Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje (1555-1603,) who determined the site by throwing grains of rice from Tibet.
The gompa was built during the time of 12th Karmapa, Jangchub Dorje (1703-1732.) At that time, Gyurme Namgyal, the fourth Chogyal of Sikkim, was a devotee of Karmapa and in 1730, he had this first Kagyu monastery constructed in the southern region of Sikkim. A decade later, he built two more Kagyu monasteries, one at Phodong in the north and another at Rumtek, in east Sikkim.

The name Dodrupchen, meaning “The Great Adept (Mahasiddha) from the Do (Valley)”, was given to the First Dodrupchen by the Tibetan Government after he dispelled the danger of an invasion by Nepalese Gurkha forces. The Dodrupchen line of incarnations traces it origin back to Prince Murum Tsenpo, the son of the Dharma King Trisong Detsen who was the root incarnation of Jikmé Lingpa.Until his escape from Tibet to Sikkim in 1957, Following his escape from Tibet, he settled in Gangtok, Sikkim. Once again he sponsored the printing of many books, including Longchenpa's Seven Treasuries and Trilogy of Finding Comfort and Ease.
