Mindful Thursday at DAC Namchi Highlights Importance of Mental Well-being Through Tele-MANAS Awareness Skit.
Namchi, 04 June (IPR): The District Administrative Centre (DAC), Namchi, observed Mindful Thursday today with a thought-provoking Nukkad Natak on Tele-MANAS presented by the students of PM Shri Senior Secondary School, Namchi.
The street play highlighted the significance of Tele-MANAS (Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States), a flagship initiative of the Government of India that offers free, round-the-clock mental health support and counselling services. Through the helpline numbers 14416 and 1800-891-4416, individuals can access confidential counselling and psychiatric assistance in more than 20 regional languages.
Addressing the gathering, DC Namchi Ms Anupa Tamling lauded the students for their engaging and informative performance, which successfully brought together officers and staff of the District Administrative Centre under the spirit of Mindful Thursday.
She appreciated the powerful message conveyed through the skit and underscored the importance of maintaining mental well-being by taking regular breaks, engaging in physical activities, and spending quality time with family and friends. She urged individuals not to suppress emotional struggles, noting that unresolved issues can adversely affect both personal relationships and overall mental health.
Speaking on the Tele-MANAS initiative, the DC encouraged people to seek support without fear of stigma or societal judgement. She emphasised that addressing mental health concerns at the right time is essential for personal well-being and for fostering healthier future generations.
She further called upon all present to prioritise their mental health and collectively contribute towards building a healthier, happier, and more compassionate society.
In her concluding remarks, the DC noted that the workplace is where people spend a substantial part of their lives, sharing both achievements and challenges. She encouraged everyone to support one another and help create a work environment founded on empathy, understanding, kindness, and mutual respect.
Earlier, Ms Pema Yangkila Bhutia, teacher at PM Shri Senior Secondary School, thanked the District Administration for providing a platform to raise awareness on mental health and the Tele-MANAS services. She stated that the primary objective of the skit was to familiarise people with the helpline, highlighting its 24×7 availability, multilingual support, and assurance of complete confidentiality.
Emphasising the importance of seeking timely assistance, she remarked that “the first step is to ask for help” and encouraged individuals facing mental health challenges to reach out without hesitation.
Through their performance, the students portrayed issues such as negative peer pressure, substance abuse, and the influence of unhealthy associations, demonstrating their impact on individuals, families, and communities. The presentation highlighted adolescence as a critical stage of development where awareness, guidance, and positive interventions play a vital role in shaping responsible choices and preventing risky behaviour.
The skit also showcased the wide range of support available under Tele-MANAS for individuals experiencing emotional distress, anxiety, stress, depression, self-harm thoughts, relationship and family concerns, substance-use issues, and other mental health challenges.
Reinforcing the message that “Swasthya hi Dhan hai” (Health is Wealth), the programme stressed the equal importance of mental and physical well-being. It further conveyed the encouraging message that “It’s okay not to be okay, but it’s not okay to give up,” inspiring individuals to seek help, remain hopeful, and prioritise their mental health.
Among those present on the occasion were Sr SP Ms Sonam Doma Bhutia, ADC (HQ) Mr Subash Ghimirey, SDM (HQ) Mr Nim Pintso Bhutia, ASP Namchi Mr Bikash Tiwari, CEO (Education) Mr G P Sharma,Heads of Offices, and other dignitaries. Also present were the Principal of PM Shri Senior Secondary School, Mr Hari Prasad Mangar, along with staff members of the District Administrative Centre, Namchi.
