NEW DELHI, August 10: Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Dr. Indra Hang S***a met Union Minister of State for Education Shri Jayant Chaudhary and urged reconsideration of the inclusion of Rai, Sherpa, Tamang and Gurung as Second Vernacular Subjects in CBSE Classes XI and XII.

Dr. S***a highlighted that these languages are already offered at the Class X level, with established curricula and teaching frameworks. He said extending them to the senior secondary level would enable students to continue learning their regional and indigenous languages.

He also noted that students generally choose these languages in place of other subjects, reducing concerns over examination schedules and logistics. Dr. S***a sought the Ministry’s intervention to promote linguistic diversity and ensure continuity of regional language education.

SMA Launches ‘Hill Trek’ Programme to Promote Local and Mountain Tourism

Gangtok,9 August : The Sikkim Mountaineering Association (SMA) has launched a new ‘Hill Trek’ programme aimed at promoting local tourist destinations around Gangtok through hiking and mountain tourism.
The first trek under the programme was conducted on Saturday, with local students and visitors from other states participating in a 12-km hike from White Memorial Hall, Gangtok, to Hanuman Tok.
SMA President and Everester Kunzang Gyatso led the trekking team. He said the Hill Trek programme will be organised every second and fourth Saturday or on holidays, with the objective of exploring and promoting lesser-known local areas from a tourism perspective.
Around 20 students and adults participated in the inaugural trek. The initiative primarily focuses on promoting mountain tourism and one-day hiking tours in and around Gangtok.
Following the completion of the trek, participants shared their experiences and expressed their gratitude to the Sikkim Mountaineering Association for organising the programme.
Technical support during the trek was provided by the Mountaineering and Adventure Institute (MAI).
The SMA said the Hill Trek programme is intended to encourage healthy outdoor activities while creating greater awareness of Sikkim’s natural landscapes and strengthening the potential of local adventure and mountain tourism.
