₹509 Crore Spent Without Approval; Assam Govt Faces CAG Heat

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has flagged major financial irregularities by the Assam government in its 2024–25 Audit Report. According to the report, ₹509.59 crore was spent in 13 cases without any budget provision or re-appropriation approval, violating Article 204 of the Constitution.

The expenditure was reportedly made under Public Debt and Debt Servicing without inclusion in the original budget, supplementary grants, or official approval orders.

The Assam government on Monday tabled the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026 in the State Assembly, marking a major move towards implementing uniform personal laws in the state.

One of the key highlights of the proposed bill is the mandatory registration of live-in relationships, which would give such unions legal recognition for the first time in Assam.

According to the proposal, the law aims to protect the rights of partners and children born from live-in relationships, while also providing legal safeguards in matters related to abandonment, inheritance disputes, and responsibilities between partners.

The bill is expected to be discussed and voted on in the Assembly on May 27.
