The Centre has approved housing assistance worth nearly ₹5,000 crore for flood-affected families in Assam under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G).

As part of the approval, 3.8 lakh new houses have been sanctioned for Assam. Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan formally handed over the approval during a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in New Delhi on August 25.

The Centre has also assured that additional PMAY houses will be sanctioned for flood-affected areas to support the rehabilitation and rebuilding of families whose homes have been damaged by floods.

The PMAY-G survey period has further been extended by 15 days, allowing more eligible flood-affected families to be included in the housing assistance programme.

The latest decision comes amid ongoing efforts to support flood-affected communities in Assam through housing, agriculture and rural development assistance.

Ahead of September 19, Garima Saikia Garg, wife of late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, has made an emotional appeal to fans and admirers not to refer to the date as his “death anniversary.”

In a message shared on social media, Garima said, “Please do not use the word ‘death anniversary’. He is here… He will always be here,” expressing that Zubeen’s presence continues to be felt by those who loved him.

A child from Assam’s Kamrup district was formally handed over to a Spanish couple following the completion of an inter-country adoption process at the District Commissioner’s Office in Amingaon on Monday.

The adoptive parents were identified as Cesar Tauste Martinez and Maria Josefa Solves Royo, who travelled from Spain for the formal handover.

The ceremony was organised by the Kamrup district administration and District Child Protection Unit in coordination with the Specialised Adoption Agency (SAA), Boko, and was presided over by Kamrup District Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra.

The adoption was completed under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and the Adoption Regulations, 2022, with coordination among CARA, SARA, DCPU Kamrup, SAA Boko and the authorised foreign adoption agency in Spain.

The Child Welfare Committee, Kamrup, had declared the child legally free for adoption on October 31, 2025. The couple reserved the child’s profile on February 27, 2026, following which the Central Adoption Resource Authority issued its No Objection Certificate on March 27.

The formal adoption order was subsequently issued by the District Magistrate, Kamrup, on May 7, 2026. The child’s birth certificate and passport were completed before the official handover.

Speaking at the ceremony, DC Deba Kumar Mishra said the adoption process could help strengthen bilateral and cultural ties between India and Spain. The adoptive parents also thanked the authorities and agencies involved in facilitating the process.
