Tamil Nadu has implemented a mobile phone ban at 52 major temples from September 1, with devotees required to deposit their phones at designated counters before entering the temple premises.

Devotees will have to pay a ₹5 fee to deposit their mobile phones. The move aims to preserve the sanctity and peaceful atmosphere of temples while preventing photography, videography and social media content inside the premises.

Temple authorities have been instructed to ensure the safe custody and proper return of deposited phones. While many devotees have welcomed the decision, some have called for more deposit counters and convenient payment options to avoid long queues.

Nepal has sought climate compensation following the devastating floods that have killed more than 1,100 people and left thousands missing. Kathmandu has named China, the US and India among the world’s biggest greenhouse gas emitters.

Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said the country wants to shift its approach from aid to climate justice and compensation, arguing that Nepal contributes very little to global emissions but faces severe consequences from climate-related disasters.

The government has also approached the UN-backed Loss and Damage Fund for financial assistance. Prime Minister Balendra ‘Balen’ Shah may raise Nepal’s demand for climate compensation at the upcoming UN General Assembly as the country faces billions of dollars in reconstruction costs.
