Gautam Gambhir, coached Indian cricket team faced a major setback on Wednesday, losing the two-match Test series to South Africa 2-0. The defeat was historic and one-sided. In the second Test, India were crushed by 408 runs — their biggest loss ever in Test cricket.

This series win was only South Africa’s second Test series victory in India, and their first since the year 2000. The result was especially disappointing for the hosts, as it also hurt India’s chances of reaching the World Test Championship final. This is now the second time in 13 months that India have been whitewashed at home.

Under coach Gautam Gambhir, India have now lost five home Tests against New Zealand and South Africa. After the defeat in Guwahati’s Barsapara Cricket Stadium, fans expressed their anger and began shouting “Gautam Gambhir hai hai.” Videos also showed Gambhir on the field while the chants continued.

A sudden volcanic eruption in northeastern Ethiopia has triggered global aviation concerns after a massive plume of ash and gas entered international air routes. The Hayli Gubbi volcano, dormant for around 12,000 years, erupted on Sunday, sending a powerful column of ash shooting 15–40 km into the atmosphere.

Unlike lava eruptions, this event involved a high-altitude blast of ash and volcanic gases. Strong upper-level winds carried the plume eastward across the Arabian Sea, entering India over Gujarat and Rajasthan before spreading toward Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Meteorological models now show the ash cloud drifting further into China.

Because the plume is moving at the same cruising altitudes used by long-distance flights, airlines temporarily rerouted aircraft and adjusted flight paths to avoid engine damage, visibility problems, and interference with sensors. Despite the large-scale impact on air traffic, authorities clarified that there is no health risk to people on the ground.

The India Meteorological Department has said that the situation for aviation over Indian airspace is expected to return to normal as the plume continues to move out of the country’s air corridor.
