On the advice of local elders, many Meiteis who had gathered for the revered pilgrimage to the Thangjing hills cancelled their plans on April 14. Because the Kuki-Zo members opposed the pilgrims' crossing of the "buffer zone," the plan did not go as planned. The Thangjing Hills are more than ten miles away from Moirang town in the Bishnupur district.

The buffer zone, which is highly fortified by security troops, divides the restive state's Kuki-dominated hill districts from the Meitei-controlled Imphal Valley.

The districts of Bishnupur and Churachandpur, which have been stricken by ethnic violence since May 2023, saw an increase in security.

In light of the current circumstances at the sacred hill, where armed Kuki men are reportedly present, community elders convinced a number of Meitei devotees who had performed prayers on Sunday in preparation for the journey to return home.
