In 1862, U Kiang Nangbah — no throne, no bloodline, just a village that trusted him —
led a resistance against the British Empire so effective, colonial officers admitted
in writing they didn't know who was leading it.

Then he fell ill. And someone from his own inner circle sold him out.

Long before the major 1857 uprisings, the hills of Meghalaya echoed with fierce resistance. U Tirot Sing Siyem, the king of Nongkhlaw, stood tall against the British East India Company.
After the British breached their agreement to respect Khasi autonomy, Tirot Sing launched the Anglo-Khasi War in April 1829. Armed with only swords, shields, and bows, his warriors utilized brilliant guerrilla tactics to stall the imperial army for over four years.

Though ultimately captured through tragic betrayal and martyred in Dhaka on July 17, 1835, his indomitable spirit lives on forever in the heart of Meghalaya and India's history.

He led the attack that started a war... then vanished 😨

1829. U Mon Bhut, right-hand man of Khasi chief U Tirot Sing, led the surprise
attack that sparked the Anglo-Khasi War against the British Empire.

Today, Tirot Sing is remembered as a martyr. Mon Bhut got one line in a colonial
record: "he fought gallantly." No birth year. No death year. Just gone.

1917. Chief Ngulkhup Haokip refused British demands to send his men to die in
WWI. They burned his village. He started a 3-year war they could never fully win.

Almost nobody outside Manipur knows this story.
