The Assam government plans to approach the Centre within the next two months seeking a reduction in the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) around Kaziranga National Park from the existing 10-km default limit to 1 km, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The move is aimed at easing restrictions that the state government says have slowed infrastructure and urban development projects in and around Bokakhat, including plans for a modern stadium and other civic works.

Sarma said preliminary discussions have already been held and the state will prepare a proposal for the Centre once Kaziranga receives its final notification.
