Assam tourism department has begun final preparations for this year's Maha Ambubachi Mahayog-an upgraded version of the traditional Ambubachi Mela held at Kamakhya Temple.
A high-level review meeting was chaired by Assam Tourism Minister Ranjit Dass on Monday, June 2.
In an official statement, the minister announced that the Maha Ambubachi Mahayog will be held from June 22 to 26, with the spiritual observance beginning at 2:56 PM on June 22 and concluding at 3:00 AM on June 26. A final round of decisions will be made during a temple visit on June 9, he added.
To ensure smooth conduct of the festival, directives have been issued to 24 departments, with a budget allocation of 4.55 crore. The event, expected to draw a record-breaking number of pilgrims, has been rebranded this year, moving away from the standard 'Mela' label to reflect a more organised and expansive spiritual event.
"We expect more than last year's seven lakh visitors. This time, we'll set up a dedicated communication cell to connect with each devotee and ensure a seamless experience," said Dass.
A ban has been imposed on footwear with open soles such as sandals near the temple premises for security and sanctity reasons. Authorities are also prepared for adverse weather conditions, with plans to close the Pandu road route if necessary. Devotees will be allowed access via two designated paths.
Officials affirmed that should any COVID-19 protocols be reintroduced, they will be strictly enforced in line with public health advisories.
During the festival, devotees have been urged to maintain discipline and refrain from creating unnecessary commotion within the temple premises.
The administration has appealed for full cooperation from all pilgrims to ensure the sanctity of the event is preserved. Notably, there will be no special arrangements for VIPs or VVIPs during the Maha Ambubachi Mahayog, as the focus remains on equal access and collective spiritual participation.
