Indian playback singer Arijit Singh has made history by becoming the most followed artist on Spotify, with over 151 million followers. According to volt.fm’s latest data (as of July 4), Singh has overtaken global music icons such as Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, and The Weeknd. This marks a major achievement not just for Arijit, but for Indian music on the global stage.

Taylor Swift ranks second with 139.6 million followers, while Ed Sheeran is third with 121 million. Billie Eilish and The Weeknd take the fourth and fifth spots with 114 million and 107.3 million followers, respectively. Arijit, known for emotional hits like Tum Hi Ho, Kesariya, and Milne Hai Mujhse Aayi, had earlier become the first Indian artist to cross 100 million followers on the platform.

The singer’s recent work includes soulful tracks in Anurag Basu’s Metro… In Dino, such as Zamaana Lage and Aur Mohabbat Kitni Karoon. In 2024, he was ranked the third most-streamed artist globally on Spotify, after Swift and Sheeran. His popularity continues to rise, both in India and abroad.

Besides Arijit, 11 other Indian artists feature in the global top 99 most followed list. These include legends like A.R. A day after announcing tough trade penalties on India, including a 25% tariff on almost all imports, U.S. President Donald Trump launched a harsh attack on India’s close relationship with Russia. In a post on Truth Social, Trump called both India and Russia “dead economies” and said he “does not care” what India decides to do with Moscow. His comments have raised concerns about the growing tensions between the two countries.

Trump has long been unhappy with India’s trade policies and once again accused the country of charging some of the “highest tariffs in the world.” He claimed that because of these practices, trade between the U.S. and India remains very limited. The new tariff decision appears to be his response to what he sees as an unfair trade relationship.

Indian officials have not yet responded officially, but the move could affect a wide range of goods and worsen business ties between the two nations. Meanwhile, Trump’s comments about Russia come at a time when India continues to maintain strong defense and energy ties with Moscow, despite pressure from Western countries.

The decision has drawn criticism globally. Brazilian President Lula called the tariffs “unjustified,” while Indian politician Asaduddin Owaisi slammed Trump’s comments and criticized the Indian government for not standing firm. The situation is still developing, and experts believe it could have long-term effects on U.S.-India relations.

In a shocking case of child abuse, a tuition teacher in Mumbai’s Malad area has been arrested for burning the hand of an 8-year-old boy. The teacher, Rajshree Rathod, allegedly used a burning candle to punish the child for his poor handwriting. The incident left the boy’s hand severely burned and caused public outrage.

According to police, the child studies in Class 3 at a school in Goregaon and regularly attended tuition at Rathod’s home in the JP Dex building, Malad. On the day of the incident, his sister dropped him off for class. Later, when she went to pick him up, she found him crying with a badly burned hand. The teacher dismissed it as drama, but the boy later told his family that she had pressed his hand onto a candle.

The child was taken to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali for treatment. His father then filed a police complaint at Kurar Police Station. Based on the complaint, police registered a case under laws related to child cruelty and arrested the teacher. Investigators are also collecting statements from the child, his family, and other students.

Locals have claimed that this is not the first time Rajshree Rathod has used harsh punishments. The case has sparked anger among parents and child rights groups, who are now demanding strict action and better safety checks for private tuition centers. Authorities have said the investigation is ongoing, and more evidence, including photos of the injuries, has been submitted.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of India’s largest IT firms, is freezing the hiring of experienced professionals and suspending annual salary hikes worldwide, according to a report by The Economic Times. The move comes amid a larger cost-cutting initiative, which includes plans to lay off nearly 12,000 employees.

As part of the restructuring, TCS has also tightened its internal policy for benched employees — those not currently deployed on any client project. Such employees now have 35 days to find a billable assignment or face termination. The phasing out of benched staff has already begun in cities like Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, and Kolkata.

The report also mentions onboarding delays for lateral hires, with waiting periods now crossing 65 days. These steps are reportedly being driven by rising operational pressures and uncertainty in global markets. An internal email to employees cited “macro-economic conditions” and shifts in client budgets as reasons behind the cost control measures.

Analysts suggest that the layoffs — particularly at the mid and senior levels — could save the company $300–400 million annually, potentially boosting margins by 100–150 basis points. However, brokerage firm Jefferies warned that the workforce cuts could lead to short-term ex*****on challenges and long-term attrition. TCS shares have dropped nearly 30% in the past year, making it one of the weakest performers on the Nifty IT index.

A private school in Hyderabad has come under sharp public criticism after its high fee structure went viral on social media. The controversy erupted after Anuradha Tiwari, founder of the Dharma Party of India, shared a post highlighting the annual fees charged by Nasr School, where even nursery classes cost a staggering ₹2,51,000.

“Now, learning ABCD will cost you ₹21,000 per month. What are these schools even teaching to justify such a ridiculously high fee?” Tiwari wrote in the post, which sparked widespread online debate. The detailed fee sheet showed that Pre-Primary I and II cost ₹2,42,700 annually, while Classes 1 and 2 are priced at ₹2,91,460. For Classes 3 and 4, the fee goes up to ₹3,22,350 per year.

The post received hundreds of comments, reflecting growing public concern over the rising cost of private education in India. While some users defended the school, saying parents had a choice in where to enroll their children, others argued that the system was turning into a “scam” and called for stricter regulations. “Very sad. Education is too costly,” wrote one user. Others pointed out that some schools in NCR charge even more, but questioned what made such schools so special.

As of now, Nasr School has not issued any official statement regarding the controversy. Meanwhile, the debate continues online, highlighting the urgent need to address affordability and transparency in the country’s private education sector.

A private company in Sweden, Erika Lust Films, has introduced an unusual policy for its employees. The company now allows its workers to take a 30-minute ma********on break every day. This rule was created to help staff feel less stressed and more relaxed while working. The goal is to improve mental health and create a more positive work environment.

The founder of the company, Erika Lust, said she came up with the idea after noticing that many team members were feeling tense and anxious, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. Erika herself also felt the same stress. She wanted to find a way to help her employees deal with their emotions in a healthy and private way.

The policy was first introduced as a trial. During this period, the company closely observed how the staff responded to the new break. According to Erika, the results were positive. Employees felt more focused and less anxious, and overall workplace happiness improved. Based on this feedback, the company decided to make the break a permanent part of their work routine starting in May 2022.

Erika Lust Films is known for producing adult content, so the topic of sexual well-being is not new for them. Erika believes that open conversations about sexual health are important, even in the workplace. She hopes that other companies will also start to think about creative ways to support their employees’ mental health.
