Punch’s Plea: Tiny Hands Longing for Love and Care

This is Punch, the baby monkey who has never known his mother’s warm embrace since birth. Abandoned right after she gave birth—too weak to care for him—Punch has grown carrying a deep longing: to be loved, to be held, to belong. In this picture, he stands tall, raising his tiny hand as if pleading, “Please see me, I want to be cherished.” He still holds a piece of food, but what he truly craves is not something to eat—it is someone to hold him, to value him, to love him for who he is. Every movement tells of loneliness, yet also of hope: hope that somewhere, there are hands that will not only feed him, but will cradle him with genuine warmth. Standing atop a rugged, snow-dusted ridge in the high Himalaya mountains, a female snow leopard stands guard while her young cub holds tightly onto her leg. Known as the "ghosts of the mountains," snow leopards are perfectly adapted to harsh, freezing alpine environments with their thick fur, wide paws that act like natural snowshoes, and long, bushy tails used for balance and extra warmth during sleep. Mothers raise their cubs in secluded rock dens, teaching them to navigate steep terrain and stalk prey like blue sheep and ibex for nearly two years.

It's red panda-monium at the Buffalo Zoo! 🥹

The Buffalo Zoo’s two red panda cubs are now visible to visitors, as they have begun sharing their outdoor habitat with their mom, 3-year-old Himalaya! 😁

The cubs, who we are excited to share are both female, were born to Himalaya and dad Mogwai (5) back on June 10, 2026, and have spent the past four months growing and bonding with mom in their behind-the-scenes area. In that time, the cubs developed crucial mobility and climbing skills that now enable them to confidently explore their outdoor habitat.

🚨‼️ The best chance for guests to see the cubs is in the morning and early afternoon, as their visibility will be limited each day while they acclimate to their new space. The Zoo cannot guarantee that guests will see the cubs during any given visit, and their on-habitat timing is subject to change as they grow.

It is happening in the woods of Kent.

Wildwood Trust and Kent Wildlife Trust released European bison into West Blean and Thornden Woods in 2022.

These giants are the closest living relatives of the ancient steppe bison that once lived in Britain.

Why does it matter? Yale Environment 360 reports that bison open up crowdewoods by stripping bark and clearing space.

Britain has wild bison again after 6,000 years. 🦬 That is not a movie plot. It is happening in the woods of Kent. Wildwood Trust and Kent Wildlife Trust released European bison into West Blean and Thornden Woods in 2022. Sunlight reaches the ground and new plants, insects and birds can return 🌿. Dust bathing patches even help lizards and wasps. Nature often knows how to heal when we give it room. For 22 years Shirley was the only elephant at the zoo in Monroe, Louisiana. In all that time she hadn't had another elephant for company.

She was born wild on Sumatra in 1948 and spent more than 20 years in American circuses. A ship she was riding on caught fire, and she lived through it. Around 1975 another elephant broke her leg. She ended up at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo, where a keeper named Solomon James looked after her.

In 1999 the zoo decided to retire her to The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee. James went with her. They arrived on July 6.

The sanctuary put Shirley in a barn stall next to a younger elephant named Jenny. More than 20 years earlier, when Jenny was a calf, she'd spent a winter with the same circus Shirley was in. A bull elephant hurt Jenny's back leg later on, and in 1995 she was left at an animal shelter outside Las Vegas, underweight and lame.

Staff at the sanctuary said the two of them leaned on the bars between their stalls so hard that the bars nearly bent. A film crew caught it, and the footage ended up in a PBS documentary called The Urban Elephant.

For the next seven years the two were hardly ever apart. People who worked there said Shirley mothered Jenny like a calf of her own. Jenny died on October 17, 2006. Shirley lived there another 14 years. She died in February 2021 at 72, the second oldest elephant in North America.

Romance isn't dead, but Hammy may have some notes. 😂🦡

Stoffel, a famously resourceful honey badger living at a wildlife centre in South Africa, developed quite a reputation for escaping from his enclosures.

One particular gate was secured using two sliding bolts, including one positioned high enough that Stoffel couldn't easily reach it.

That presented a problem.

Fortunately, Stoffel lived with another honey badger named Hammy.

During one escape, the pair worked together to tackle the gate. Stoffel dealt with one part of the locking mechanism, while Hammy helped him reach what he couldn't manage alone — effectively becoming part of his escape equipment.

Once the bolts were dealt with, the pair simply opened the gate and walked out.

It wasn't Stoffel's only jailbreak.

His keeper later built a walled enclosure nicknamed “Honey Badger Alcatraz.”

Stoffel escaped from that too, using branches and even piled-up rocks as makeshift climbing equipment.

But using Hammy might remain his most creative solution.

Nothing says “relationship goals” quite like looking at your partner and thinking, “If I stand on you, I reckon we can both get out of here.
