The movement for women's rights is more than a century old. From the basic economic right to earn a livelihood to the very fundamental political right of casting one's vote, women have always had to challenge the society.
The history of International Women's Day is associated with the historical awakening of women around the world, particularly in the West, which was motivated by the idea that equality and rights have to be seized in real terms, mere written guarantee of certain liberties is not adequate. Yet the relevance of the women's movement is not limited to the West or to a section of privileged white women. A woman from a marginalized community in a interior location might need economic upliftment while a well educated working woman might need awareness about combating sexual harassment at workplace but both of them need the support of the women's movement nonetheless.
The essence of the IWD lies in the undying spirit of uncountable women before us who defied domination, resisted oppression and spoke up against violence. Women's day is not a pretty holiday for availing discounts and engaging in mindless consumerism. It is a moment to honour the sacrifice which went onto earning the limited liberties that women exercise today. It should be a moment to take stock of the gap that still exists in achieving equality, regroup and gather together with double the force to continue the struggle against patriarchy and all other forms of power and control. IWD also provides us with a moment to introspect - to analyze ourselves, our performances, our families and our treatment of women around us. Herein lies the significance of this day.
