Nengkra Residents and Civil Society Hold Peaceful Protest Against Inauguration of Substandard Library Project
Nengkra, East Garo Hills | July 11, 2025
Today, the people of Nengkra A’we, along with various civil society organizations, stood together in a peaceful and silent protest holding posters and slogans as a powerful symbol of united resistance against the Meghalaya government’s decision to inaugurate the Children Adolescents, and Digital Library construction at Nengkra, East Garo Hills, despite serious concerns regarding its quality and ex*****on.
The protest was not merely a reaction to the day's event it was the culmination of deep concern, disappointment, and a feeling of betrayal by the very authorities entrusted with public welfare.
Following a joint inspection conducted by the residents and representatives of Combined NGOs including the Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC), A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), A’chik Dedicated Integrity Leaders (ADIL), All A’chik Youth Federation (AAYF), and A’chik Progressive Approach (APA) it was discovered that the library building suffers from serious structural and qualitative deficiencies.
From poorly executed plastering to cracks in the main building, and from substandard toilet and rainwater harvesting facilities to an overall disregard for sanctioned design and cost specifications, the construction reflects a gross misuse of public funds meant for the development of children and youth in this region.
The matter was formally brought to the notice of the Block Development Officer (BDO) on 30th June 2025, who assured the concerned organizations and villagers that appropriate action would be taken within a month. Unfortunately, no steps were taken thereafter. In pursuit of justice, the Combined NGOs then submitted a detailed complaint to the Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills on 30th June 2025. However, this too met with silence and inaction from the district administration.
What is most disheartening is that instead of addressing these concerns or initiating a technical inquiry, the administration has gone ahead to prepare for the official inauguration of this incomplete and substandard structure without the consent of the residents or the NGOs. The move is seen by the people as a betrayal of trust and an affront to the voices of the community.
To make matters worse, the inauguration is being staged today, allegedly to coincide with the virtual visit of the Hon’ble Union Finance Minister, who is set to inaugurate multiple projects across the state. This calculated attempt to showcase faulty work as successful development in front of a central dignitary not only distorts the truth but also insults the collective conscience of the region.
This act is not just administrative oversight and it is exploitation in its most unfiltered form. It reflects a dangerous culture of negligence, where accountability is conveniently set aside for the sake of political optics.
We, the people of Nengkra, along with the undersigned NGOs and community leaders, strongly condemn this move. We believe this is not only a betrayal of the people of Nengkra, but of the larger A’chik region that has for too long suffered in silence under systemic neglect.
Let it be known: We will not be silent anymore. We will stand firm in our demand for justice, transparency, and genuine development. We call upon all right-thinking citizens, watchdog institutions, and higher authorities to take note of this gross injustice and intervene before it sets a dangerous precedent.
Our children deserve better. Our future deserves integrity. Our region deserves justice.
