Nengkra Residents and Civil Society Hold Peaceful Protest Against Inauguration of Substandard Library Project

Nengkra, East Garo Hills | July 11, 2025
Today, the people of Nengkra A’we, along with various civil society organizations, stood together in a peaceful and silent protest holding posters and slogans as a powerful symbol of united resistance against the Meghalaya government’s decision to inaugurate the Children Adolescents, and Digital Library construction at Nengkra, East Garo Hills, despite serious concerns regarding its quality and ex*****on.

The protest was not merely a reaction to the day's event it was the culmination of deep concern, disappointment, and a feeling of betrayal by the very authorities entrusted with public welfare.
Following a joint inspection conducted by the residents and representatives of Combined NGOs including the Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC), A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), A’chik Dedicated Integrity Leaders (ADIL), All A’chik Youth Federation (AAYF), and A’chik Progressive Approach (APA) it was discovered that the library building suffers from serious structural and qualitative deficiencies.

From poorly executed plastering to cracks in the main building, and from substandard toilet and rainwater harvesting facilities to an overall disregard for sanctioned design and cost specifications, the construction reflects a gross misuse of public funds meant for the development of children and youth in this region.

The matter was formally brought to the notice of the Block Development Officer (BDO) on 30th June 2025, who assured the concerned organizations and villagers that appropriate action would be taken within a month. Unfortunately, no steps were taken thereafter. In pursuit of justice, the Combined NGOs then submitted a detailed complaint to the Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills on 30th June 2025. However, this too met with silence and inaction from the district administration.
What is most disheartening is that instead of addressing these concerns or initiating a technical inquiry, the administration has gone ahead to prepare for the official inauguration of this incomplete and substandard structure without the consent of the residents or the NGOs. The move is seen by the people as a betrayal of trust and an affront to the voices of the community.

To make matters worse, the inauguration is being staged today, allegedly to coincide with the virtual visit of the Hon’ble Union Finance Minister, who is set to inaugurate multiple projects across the state. This calculated attempt to showcase faulty work as successful development in front of a central dignitary not only distorts the truth but also insults the collective conscience of the region.

This act is not just administrative oversight and it is exploitation in its most unfiltered form. It reflects a dangerous culture of negligence, where accountability is conveniently set aside for the sake of political optics.

We, the people of Nengkra, along with the undersigned NGOs and community leaders, strongly condemn this move. We believe this is not only a betrayal of the people of Nengkra, but of the larger A’chik region that has for too long suffered in silence under systemic neglect.

Let it be known: We will not be silent anymore. We will stand firm in our demand for justice, transparency, and genuine development. We call upon all right-thinking citizens, watchdog institutions, and higher authorities to take note of this gross injustice and intervene before it sets a dangerous precedent.
Our children deserve better. Our future deserves integrity. Our region deserves justice.

Meghalaya Accelerates Organic Agriculture Push with Strategic National Partnership, inks MoA to empower farmer-led growth

Shillong, July 9, 2025: In a move that strengthens Meghalaya’s goal to become a national leader in organic agriculture, the Meghalaya Natural and Organic Society for Livelihood and Innovation in Agriculture (MEGNOLIA) facilitated the signing of a significant Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) today between Mother India Farms, a Bengaluru-based organic Agri-enterprise, and Tomonpo Anglong Organic Farmers Producer Company Ltd., a farmer collective based in Ri-Bhoi district.
The agreement is set to enhance the integration of Meghalaya’s certified organic produce, starting with the state’s premium Kew variety pineapples, into national and global supply chains. Nearly 300 registered farmers under Tomonpo Anglong Organic FPC currently cultivate this crop across six villages in Ri-Bhoi.
Dr. Vijay Kumar D, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Government of Meghalaya, in his interaction with the team from Mother India Farms enlightened them of the presence of Farmer Producer Groups (FPOs), processing units in the state. He stated, “We will be happy to support. Our aim is to enhance the income of farmers.” He said that the Government is looking forward to having advance certification processes and take the produce to the global market. He also expressed his optimism stating that the technical expertise and setting up of plants, will benefit the farmer-producer groups who are engaged in a number of agricultural produce such as pineapples, turmeric, and others.
Mr. R. Durairaj, CEO, Mother India Farms, stated, “We are confident in Meghalaya, we can do better. FoodChain ID is also guiding us.” He stated the importance of obtaining necessary certifications to market the state’s products to international markets, and the MoA is a crucial step in this regard.
Founded in 2017 under the MOVCD-NER scheme with support from the Directorate of Horticulture, Tomonpo has expanded to manage over 500 hectares of certified organic farmland and produces 600-800 metric tonnes of pineapples annually. Over the past six years, the collective has built a reputation for quality and consistency, supplying to institutional buyers including Mother Dairy and Reliance Fresh.
Under the terms of the MoA, Mother India Farms will fully finance and implement the Internal Control System (ICS), including training, internal inspections, data management, and organic certification facilitation, at no cost to the farmers. The company will also oversee the procurement and marketing of certified produce and extend organic price premiums based on market conditions and quality standards.
This collaboration is seen as a major step in building a farmer-centric, market-ready ecosystem. It aligns with Meghalaya’s broader vision to transform into an organic hub by empowering farmer institutions and securing long-term livelihoods.
In addition to pineapples, Tomonpo farmers also grow certified organic ginger, black sticky rice, Khasi Mandarin, banana, and guava. As the state gears up for the Meghalaya Pineapple Festival 2025, the MoA showcases how farmer groups in the state are ready to scale their presence in premium, export-oriented organic markets.
The Government of Meghalaya continues to work toward sustainable rural development through institutional partnerships like this, strengthening the Agri-economy, and reaffirming State’s position as a reliable source of clean, traceable, organic produce.
Other dignitaries present in the event were Smt B.Mylliem Umlong, Director Horticulture; Shri M.Lyngdoh Suiam, Chief Administrative Officer, MEGNOLIA; Shri Pranjal J. Dutta, District Horticulture Officer, Ri Bhoi; Shri Raghavendra MT, Senior General Manager- Operations & Special Projects; Smti Chinmayee Deulgaonkar, Managing Director, FoodChain ID, signatories John Lyngdoh, CEO of Tomonpo Anglong Organic Producer Company Limited among others.

Shillong, July 1st, 2025: The Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS), under the Chief Minister’s Skills Mission launched a comprehensive four-day Local Training Providers (LTP) state level workshop, today, at the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM), Mawdiangdiang, New Shillong.
The state level workshop, chaired by Shri Jagdish Chelani, IAS, Executive Director of MSSDS, scheduled from 1st to 4th July 2025 aims to empower and build capacities, deepen systemic understanding, and foster integration across key thematic areas to strengthen the skilling ecosystem in alignment with the Meghalaya’s Vision for FY 2025–26.
Shri Jagdish Chelani, outlining the vision of the programme, commended the MSSDS team and expressed optimism that the workshop would empower Local Training Providers (LTPs) to identify steps to enhance their trade expertise, thereby transforming the state’s skilling framework. He urged the LTPs to secure placement partners for trainees, emphasizing their critical role as frontline agents in improving the quality, relevance, and impact of skilling initiatives.
A total of 119 empanelled training providers, representing 86 training institutes, will undergo capacity-building sessions conducted by the MSSDS Management team and MSSDS partners in the skilling ecosystem, namely - the Directorate of Employment and Craftsmanship Training (DECT), Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), PRIME Rural, and Avenues. These providers will, in turn, cascade the training to grassroots beneficiaries, ensuring consistent knowledge transfer at the community level.

This will contribute to institutional strengthening at the state level for effective planning, delivery, and monitoring of high-quality, market-relevant training programs.
The workshop reaffirms the state’s commitment to transforming the skilling landscape by equipping youth with market-relevant skills and enabling sustainable livelihoods.

Game-Changer for Garo Hills, Govt Lays Foundation Stone for Additional Secretariat Complex at Tura
Over 4.600 FOCUS Producer Groups to be benefitted in Garo Hills alone, disbursement of Rs 7.93 crores initiated
Shillong, June 19th, 2025: In a significant step towards bringing governance closer to the people and fostering economic empowerment in Garo Hills, Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Conrad K. Sangma, accompanied by Hon'ble Deputy Chief Minister Shri Sniawbhalang Dhar, Hon’ble Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Shri Thomas A. Sangma, and other Hon’ble Cabinet Ministers, today laid the foundation stone for the Additional Secretariat Complex in Tura.
The 165.8 crore initiative reflects the Government’s commitment to accessible, accountable, and inclusive governance, for the people of Garo Hills. The Secretariat in Tura will enable faster delivery of government schemes, improved citizen access, and enhanced coordination between different departments of the Government of Meghalaya.
Speaking at the event, Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Conrad K Sangma highlighted the state government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen governance and infrastructure across all the blocks. He also announced a dedicated engineering wing within the Police Department, and various infrastructure upgrades supported by the World Bank, including renovations of police stations, PHCs, and CHCs.
Hon’ble Chief Minister stated that the government has prioritized actionable outcomes, ensuring that administration reaches people at the grassroots, block, sub-divisional, district, and state levels. Hon’ble Chief Minister also stated, “Our goal and our efforts continue. We have sanctioned for mini secretariat in Jowai and Pynursla.”
At the heart of the government’s economic transformation agenda is the FOCUS (Farmers’ Collectivisation for Upscaling Production and Marketing Systems) scheme - Meghalaya’s flagship rural empowerment initiative. Today, the disbursement process of ₹7.93 crore has been initiated to benefit 4,610 Producer Groups (PGs) in Garo Hills alone. The FOCUS initiative, backed by market linkages and technical handholding, has emerged as a national model for collective farming and rural wealth creation.
Hon’ble Chief Minister reiterated that FOCUS and CM ELEVATE will continue to be central to Meghalaya’s inclusive growth model, ensuring that farmers, SHGs, and rural entrepreneurs become key drivers of the state’s economic success.
Additionally, beneficiaries under CM ELEVATE, FOCUS and SHGs also shared inspiring stories, highlighting the impact of these schemes on their livelihoods.
Underscoring the government’s focus on youth and education, 10 schools received M-Tabs under the Chief Minister’s Digital Learning Aid scheme, while five educational institutions received Sanitary Pad Vending Machines, boosting access to menstrual hygiene for young girls.
Shri Conrad K. Sangma also launched Awang Chips, a jackfruit chip brand from the Rongara PRIME Hub, the Meghalaya Economic Inclusive Program (MEIP), and the CM Fellowship, reinforcing the state’s focus on inclusive economic growth and innovation.
The foundation of the Tura Secretariat follows a string of impactful projects launched across Garo Hills, in last two days including:
• Inauguration of the Double Lane Steel Truss Bridge over the Bakla River
• Foundation of Capt. Williamson Memorial Hr. Sec. School (₹7 crore) in South West Garo Hills
• 125 Community Centres inaugurated virtually under the MegLife Project
• Foundation of a Synthetic Athletic Track in Baghmara
• Launch of the Chitmang Chaiwat Nature-Based Glamping Project, backed by ₹93 lakh in eco-tourism funding
These developments reaffirm Garo Hills as a central pillar in Meghalaya’s vision for inclusive growth, innovation, and regional equity.
