Most electric locomotives of Indian Railways receive electricity from the overhead electric line (OHE), which supplies 25,000 volts AC (25 kV AC). The locomotive's pantograph collects this high-voltage power from the overhead wire and transfers it to the locomotive's electrical system.

Inside the locomotive, a main transformer reduces the high voltage to lower levels. Modern electronic converters and inverters then regulate and convert the electricity into a form suitable for the traction motors. The actual voltage supplied to the motors can vary depending on the locomotive type and operating conditions.

The traction motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy, which turns the wheels. This is what enables a locomotive to pull a train weighing hundreds or even thousands of tons at high speeds. Modern electric locomotives are highly efficient in their use of energy.

However, it is not accurate to say that every train uses only 15–20 units (kWh) of electricity per kilometer. Power consumption depends on many factors, including the train's weight, speed, gradients, number of stops, locomotive type, and operating conditions.

Even so, electric trains are generally much more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly than diesel trains. This is one of the main reasons why Indian Railways is rapidly expanding the electrification of its rail network.

अंतर्राष्ट्रीय महिला दिवस के अवसर पर गोरखपुर जंक्शन स्थित मैकेनाइज्ड लॉन्ड्री महिला सशक्तिकरण का एक प्रेरणादायक उदाहरण बनकर सामने आई है।
यहाँ रेलवे की लॉन्ड्री का पूरा संचालन महिला कर्मचारियों द्वारा किया जाता है। ट्रेनों में उपयोग होने वाले चादर, कंबल और अन्य लिनेन की सफाई और तैयारी की पूरी प्रक्रिया महिलाएँ संभालती हैं।
यह मैकेनाइज्ड लॉन्ड्री गोरखपुर जंक्शन रेलवे स्टेशन परिसर में स्थित है, जो पूर्वोत्तर रेलवे (NER) का मुख्यालय भी है।
यहाँ काम करने वाली महिला कर्मचारी रेलवे के लिए आने वाले लिनेन को संभालती हैं और सुनिश्चित करती हैं कि यात्रियों को साफ और अच्छी गुणवत्ता वाले बिस्तर उपलब्ध हों।
उनकी मेहनत और समर्पण रेलवे की सेवा गुणवत्ता को बेहतर बनाने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाता है।
मैकेनाइज्ड लॉन्ड्री में काम कई चरणों में किया जाता है:

✔ ट्रेनों से लिनेन उतारना
✔ व्यवस्थित तरीके से छँटाई करना
✔ आधुनिक मशीनों में धुलाई
✔ प्रेस और फिनिशिंग
✔ लिनेन को मोड़ना और पैक करना

महिला कर्मचारी ड्राई-क्लीनिंग मशीन, कंबल धोने की मशीन, ड्रायर और प्रेसिंग यूनिट को भी कुशलतापूर्वक संचालित करती हैं।

महिला दिवस पर रांची–इरगांव ट्रेन का संचालन पूरी तरह 15 महिला रेलकर्मियों की टीम ने किया, जिसमें लोको पायलट से लेकर गार्ड और आरपीएफ तक सभी जिम्मेदारियां महिलाओं ने निभाईं। (पूरी जानकारी नीचे कमेंट में)
