Human Operator is an experimental AI system built during MIT Media Labā€™s Hard Mode hackathon that can temporarily guide and control human hand movements using AI and electrical muscle stimulation (EMS). By combining a head-mounted camera, voice commands, AI vision models, and electrical signals sent directly to muscles, the system can make a personā€™s hand perform actions like waving, making gestures, or even playing piano keys. The technology could one day help stroke survivors and patients relearn physical movements ā€” but it also raises major questions around safety, consent, and human control.
