- 4,397 diesel locomotives are currently in the Indian Railways fleet.
- 2,500 locomotives are being retained for disaster management and strategic requirements.
- 1,000 diesel locomotives will continue in regular operations.
- Every year, 2–3% of locomotives reach the end of their service life.
- With a total locomotive strength of around 15,000, nearly 300–450 locomotives are phased out annually.
- The average service life of a locomotive is 35 years.
