Las Vegas Freestyle Chess Grand Slam: Praggnanandhaa Shocks Magnus Carlsen

In a thrilling encounter at the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour in Las Vegas, Indian grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa stunned World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen with a brilliant win in just 39 moves during a 10-minute rapid game. The match, played in the Chess960 format, showcased Praggnanandhaa’s creativity and precision, with the 19-year-old maintaining nearly 94% accuracy, clearly outclassing Carlsen.
This victory placed Praggnanandhaa at the top of the “White Group” standings, tied with Uzbekistan’s Abdusattorov and Sindarov, and secured him a spot in the quarterfinals. The win is historic as it completes his clean sweep of Carlsen in all three formats — classical, rapid, and blitz.

Fauja Singh, the venerable 114-year-old marathon runner known as the “Turbaned Tornado,” tragically died on Monday, July 14, 2025, after a road accident in his native Beas Pind, Punjab. He was struck by an unidentified vehicle while crossing the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway and succumbed to injuries at a hospital. A 26-year-old Canada-based NRI, Amritpal Singh Dhillon, has been arrested.
His passing has caused widespread grief, with tributes from PM Narendra Modi and other leaders. Born in 1911, Fauja Singh began serious running at 89, finding fame after completing the London Marathon in 2000. At 100, he became the first centenarian to complete a full marathon in Toronto. Though Guinness couldn’t certify his age, his feats, simple lifestyle, and vegetarian diet inspired millions globally. He was a torchbearer for the 2012 London Olympics and featured in international ad campaigns. His legacy of resilience and defying age will continue to inspire.
