Assam has officially passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill, becoming the third BJP-ruled state after Uttarakhand and Gujarat to do so. The bill was cleared on Wednesday amid heavy opposition protests and demands for it to be referred to a select committee for deeper scrutiny.
During the Assembly debate, Himanta Biswa Sarma accused Congress leaders of giving the issue a religious angle instead of focusing on legal reforms. A major talking point of the legislation is the exemption provided to tribal communities under Assam’s UCC framework, a decision that has sparked significant political discussion and mixed public reactions across the state.
