Amit Shah’s Amarnath Yatra Review Meeting Deferred to June 12; Security, Pilgrim Facilities on Agenda

670 Paramilitary Companies Being Deployed Across J&K for Smooth Conduct of Pilgrimage

Jammu, June 8: The high-level review meeting on arrangements for the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, scheduled to be chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on June 8, has been postponed and will now be held on June 12 in New Delhi due to the Minister’s prior engagements.

Official sources said senior Jammu and Kashmir officials have been informed about the revised schedule. The meeting will comprehensively assess preparations for the annual pilgrimage, including security measures, healthcare services, sanitation, accommodation, transportation, and other facilities for pilgrims.

The review meeting is expected to be attended by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat, Home Secretary Chandraker Bharti, Intelligence Chief Nitish Kumar and other senior officers from Jammu and Kashmir. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, senior Ministry of Home Affairs officials, chiefs of central armed police forces, intelligence agencies and Army officers are also expected to participate.

Sources said the government is anticipating a significant turnout of pilgrims this year in view of the surge in tourist arrivals to Jammu and Kashmir and the enthusiastic response to Yatra registrations.

The 57-day annual pilgrimage is scheduled to commence on July 3 and conclude on August 28, coinciding with the auspicious occasions of Sharavan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan.

Meanwhile, deployment of central security forces for the pilgrimage has already begun across both Jammu and Kashmir divisions. The Union Home Ministry has sanctioned 670 paramilitary companies for Yatra security duties.

In the Jammu region, security deployment will extend from Lakhanpur, the gateway to Jammu and Kashmir, covering key installations and transit points including national highways, railway stations, airports, bus terminals and Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas. Security personnel, alongside local police, will ensure safe movement of pilgrim convoys and protection of accommodation centres.

In Kashmir, elaborate security arrangements are being put in place at the Baltal and Nunwan base camps, along both traditional Yatra routes and at the holy cave shrine. Additional measures are also being taken at locations designated for pilgrims’ stay and movement.

Officials said all security and logistical arrangements will be fully operational at least a week before the commencement of the pilgrimage.

Sources added that overall security across Jammu and Kashmir is being further strengthened ahead of the Yatra to eliminate any potential threats and ensure a peaceful pilgrimage.

During the June 12 review meeting, Amit Shah is expected to assess the preparedness of security and civil departments and evaluate measures aimed at ensuring the safe, smooth and successful conduct of the annual pilgrimage. Discussions are likely to focus on security deployment, counter-terror operations, protection of pilgrim convoys, emergency response systems, healthcare facilities, communication networks, intelligence coordination, surveillance mechanisms and contingency planning for any unforeseen challenges.

World's longest high-altitude bi-directional Zojila tunnel nears breakthrough in J&K

Jammu, June 8: The final breakthrough of the 13.15- kilometre Zojila Tunnel, which is expected to take place on June 9, will mark a major milestone in India's infrastructure history as the country moves closer to achieving all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh.

According to a press release, the 13.153-km Zojila Tunnel, located between Baltal (Sonamarg) and Meenamarg (Drass and Kargil) in the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, is set to become the world's longest single-tube bi-directional road tunnel at the highest altitude.

The project is being executed to provide all-weather connectivity across one of India's most challenging Himalayan corridors, which remains cut off for long periods every year due to heavy snowfall, avalanches, and extreme weather conditions. Positioned at an elevation of about 11,578 feet above sea level, the tunnel represents one of the most significant engineering achievements in India's mountain infrastructure sector.

The release said that the main tunnel begins at the West Portal at Baltal and ends at the East Portal at Meenamarg, with tunnelling carried out from both ends. The achievement of the final breakthrough marks the defining construction milestone of the excavation phase and reflects the successful completion of the most critical stage of underground works in highly demanding terrain.

This landmark project is being executed by Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) for the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).

The Zojila Tunnel is being constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), a method particularly suited to fragile Himalayan geology and variable rock conditions. NATM relies on sequential excavation, immediate support measures such as shotcrete and rock bolting, and continuous geotechnical monitoring, allowing engineers to respond flexibly to changing ground conditions during tunnelling. This approach has been critical to maintaining stability, safety, and construction progress in one of the most demanding underground environments in India.

In addition to the main tunnel, the project scope includes connecting highway works, bridges, protective structures, cut-and-cover sections, snow protection components, and the Nilgrar twin tunnels, making it a comprehensive corridor development.

Once fully operational, the project will ensure 365-day connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh, improving access to Drass, Kargil, Leh, and surrounding regions while significantly strengthening mobility, logistics reliability, and strategic access in a sensitive border zone.

The Zojila Tunnel Project carries immense socio-economic and strategic importance. It is expected to transform regional connectivity, improve the movement of people and goods, reduce weather-related isolation, and support economic activity, tourism, and essential services across the region.

At the national level, the tunnel also strengthens operational mobility and logistics preparedness in a strategically important frontier corridor, underlining its role not only as an infrastructure project but also as a national connectivity and security asset.

The ex*****on of the project in the western Himalayas has involved exceptional engineering challenges, including fragile geology, sensitive rock formations, avalanche-prone terrain, and harsh winter conditions. Despite these difficulties, the project stands out as a transformative intervention in Himalayan transport infrastructure and a strong example of India's growing capability in complex high-altitude tunnel engineering, the release said.

The release further stated that this final breakthrough is a defining moment for the Zojila Tunnel Project because it demonstrates the successful ex*****on of one of India's most complex transport infrastructure works in a hostile Himalayan environment.

With excavation now completed, the project moves closer to delivering its long-envisioned objective of seamless all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh, bringing long-term benefits in mobility, economic integration, and strategic resilience.

The release also informed that the construction of the project began on October 1, 2020, while the first blasting at the Nilgrar Tunnel took place on October 14, 2020. Part one of the project, including approach roads, bridges, Nilgrar twin tunnels, cut-and-cover works and snow gallery components, was completed on March 15, 2025.

The total project length, including tunnel roads and bridges, spans 30.894 km, while the main Zojila tunnel itself is 13.153 km long.

The release further noted that the project has achieved 10 million safe man-hours as of April 2026, underscoring safety milestones during construction.

Meanwhile, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari is scheduled to trigger the breakthrough blast at the strategically significant Zojila Tunnel on June 9, which will link Jammu and Kashmir with Ladakh.

BOPEE Cancels M.Sc Nursing Entrance Test Over OMR Sheet Discrepancy, Fresh Exam Date Soon

Srinagar, June 8: The Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE) has cancelled the Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission to M.Sc Nursing Courses-2026 after detecting discrepancies in the data printed on certain OMR answer sheets, officials said on Sunday.

According to officials, the entrance examination was conducted on June 7 at various centres across Jammu and Kashmir. During the scrutiny of examination records, BOPEE noticed mismatches in candidate-related information on some OMR sheets, raising concerns over the accuracy and fairness of the evaluation process.

In view of the technical irregularity, the Board decided to annul the examination to protect the interests of candidates and uphold the transparency and credibility of the selection process.
BOPEE said the discrepancy was technical in nature but had the potential to affect the assessment of answer sheets.

Consequently, the Board resolved to conduct the examination afresh to ensure a fair and error-free process for all aspirants.
The Board has assured candidates that a revised schedule for the M.Sc Nursing Entrance Examination will be announced separately through official notifications.

Aspirants have been advised to remain updated through BOPEE’s official channels regarding the fresh examination date and issuance of new admit cards.

The cancellation has sparked concern among candidates who appeared in the examination. However, several aspirants welcomed the move, stating that a re-examination was necessary to ensure transparency and equal opportunity for all applicants.

Meanwhile, BOPEE has initiated corrective measures to address the issue and ensure the smooth conduct of the re-scheduled examination without any technical shortcomings.

Officials reiterated that the Board remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of fairness and transparency in entrance examinations and assured that no candidate would suffer due to the technical lapse.

Poonch, June 7: At least 13 shops were damaged after a massive fire broke out in the busy Bufliaz market area of Poonch district on Sunday, causing extensive damage to commercial establishments and triggering panic among traders and local residents.

Eyewitnesses said flames erupted from one of the shops and quickly spread to adjoining structures, engulfing a row of commercial establishments within a short span of time.

Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from the market as locals, police personnel and emergency responders rushed to the spot to contain the blaze.

Officials said firefighting teams launched an operation to prevent the fire from spreading further to nearby structures. The blaze was eventually brought under control after strenuous efforts by firefighters and local volunteers.

Preliminary reports indicate that 13 shops sustained damage in the incident, though the exact extent of losses is yet to be assessed.

Shopkeepers said the fire destroyed goods, inventories and business establishments, resulting in substantial financial losses.

“There was panic in the market as the flames spread rapidly from one shop to another,” an eyewitness said.

No loss of human life or serious injuries were immediately reported in the incident.

Authorities have initiated an assessment of the damage, while the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Local traders have appealed to the administration for compensation and assistance to affected shopkeepers who suffered losses in the blaze.
