The RST reporting system was developed by Arthur W. Braaten, W2BSR, in 1934. It was based on the ITU Radio Regulations codified in Cairo in 1938. The system was designed to provide a standardized way for amateur radio operators to exchange information about the quality of a radio signal being received.
The RST system uses a three-digit number, with one digit for each of the following:
* Readability (R): How well the signal can be understood.
* Signal Strength (S): The strength of the signal, measured in S-units.
* Tone (T): The quality of the signal's tone, only used for CW (Morse code) signals.
The RST system has become a widely used and accepted standard in amateur radio. It is a simple and effective way to communicate signal quality, and it has helped to improve communication between amateur radio operators around the world.
