The two-day educational fair brought together over 35 universities and colleges from across the country, offering a wide array of programs across engineering, medical, management, arts, and emerging fields.

Designed as a one-stop platform for students who recently completed their 10th or 12th-grade exams, or those considering career transitions, the expo served as a vital link between educational institutions and aspiring learners.

Organised by SS Exhibition and Media Pvt. Ltd., the event provided opportunities for students to interact directly with university representatives, ask questions, explore course options, and receive counselling tailored to their interests and academic background.

Business Northeast (BNE) spoke to Manish Dhanda, Founder of SS Exhibition and Media Pvt. Ltd., the organising body behind Educatus. Reflecting on the journey of the expo, Dhanda said:

"We entered the exhibition space back in 2006, and for nearly two decades, our goal has remained the same — to provide a common platform where students and parents can connect with reputed higher education institutions. Despite recurring diplomatic engagements and decades-long cultural affinity, Japanese investment in Northeast India remains largely symbolic, with tangible business commitments yet to materialize. During an exclusive interview with Pankhi Sarma of Business North East (BNE), Rajeev Gupta, Chairman of the Indo-Japan Business Council for Northeast India, offered an unvarnished assessment of the current Indo-Japan business landscape in the region, highlighting the gaps, progress, and potential.

Gupta, who has been working at the intersection of Indo-Japan relations and Northeast India’s economic development, confirmed that a high-level Japanese delegation visited Assam from May 3 to May 5, 2025. The delegation, led by the Speaker of the Japanese Diet, included over 30 businessmen representing sectors such as medical equipment, semiconductors, and skill development.

“At this stage, it was more of an exploratory visit to understand the ecosystem, infrastructure, and opportunities in Assam,” Gupta said, noting that no immediate investment commitments were announced.

According to Gupta, the core reason Japanese capital is hesitant to flow into the Northeast lies in two critical deficits: infrastructure and skilled manpower.

“Japan plunges where there is infrastructure and where there is manpower. Both of these are currently under development in the Northeast,” he said.

In a bid to strengthen the startup ecosystem in the Northeast and to support budding startups, especially those that are under two years of age, ICCo- a Guwahati- based development agency and startup incubator, have begun with a startup outreach program for the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS) under Startup India hosted at Assam Textile Institute, Guwahati.

Speaking to Business North East (BNE), Gayatri Baruah, Chief Program Manager at ICCo, Guwahati said that “ICCo is one of the recognised incubators under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry's DPIIT-backed initiative, and we are facilitating the application, due diligence, and mentorship process for eligible startups from all domains, not just agriculture, but also healthcare, education, and especially technology-led innovations.”

“The scheme primarily targets startups under two years old and spans multiple sectors, from agritech and healthtech to education and deep-tech. It is designed to support startups at the most critical stage of their journey—with funds ranging between ₹10 lakh and ₹50 lakh,” Baruah stated.

“Startups go through an application and scrutiny phase, followed by 45 days of due diligence. Post selection, they receive mentorship on business modelling, compliance, and scale-up strategies. Around 20% of the funding is non-returnable, while the rest is to be repaid depending on the startup's business model,” Baruah emphasised.

Amid growing policy emphasis on leveraging CSR for decentralised development, Smile Foundation is positioning Assam as a national pilot for convergence-based service delivery—linking corporate funding with state-run education, healthcare, and skilling infrastructure. The foundation is embedding its operational frameworks into Assam’s government systems, aiming to institutionalise outcome-linked public-private models that could be scaled across other climate-vulnerable states like Odisha and Bihar.

“Assam offers a complex but structured ecosystem where policy windows and private capital can intersect. We are using this state to pilot scalable templates for outcome-driven social development,” said Puneet Bali, Director – Healthcare, Smile Foundation, in a recent interview with Business North East (BNE), who is leading the foundation’s expansion roadmap in the region.

Smile Foundation’s multi-sector approach includes expanding its healthcare delivery through mobile medical units (MMUS), linking them with state-run Primary Health Centres (PHCS), ICDS centres, and school health schemes. The foundation currently operates 13 MMUS across Northeast India, of which six are in Assam. Plans are underway to transform these into digital healthcare data nodes contributing to health informatics and referral networks.

In the education sector, the organisation is extending its school transformation programme to underserved districts with a focus on foundational learning, retention, and access to government support schemes. Simultaneously, Smile Foundation will scale its Mission Swabhiman programme—focused on menstrual hygiene, maternal nutrition, and reproductive health—targeting adolescent girls and mothers in char and flood-prone belts such as Morigaon, Barpeta, and Dhemaji.
